PURCHASE, N.Y. – It was a historic night on the turf of GoValiants.com Field on Wednesday, as the Manhattanville College field hockey team defeated Neumann by a final of 4-2. The victory is the team's first-ever Atlantic East Conference win in their inaugural season in their new athletic home. The victory improves the Valiants' record overall to 4-7 and 1-2 in the Atlantic East.
The Valiants had four different players score each of the goals in the win.
Ava Panzer (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) and
Abbey Playle (Reading, England/Leigh High School) each earned an assist in addition to their goals, while
Felicity Williams (Glen Falls, N.Y./Glen Falls) and
Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, NY/John Jay High School) both ended the night with a tally as well.
After a scoreless first quarter, Williams was the first to find the back of the cage for either team, scoring off a pass from Playle in the 20
th minute to put the Valiants ahead in the second. The lead would be short lived, as just over a minute later Neumann netted the equalizer off Alexis Everett's goal. The Knights would then take the lead in the 23
rd minute as Lizzie Frame was able to put a shot past
Florence Harrison (Melbourne, Australia/Balwyn High School). The 2-1 Neumann lead would carry into halftime.
Eight minutes into the third, Panzer would even the contest once more with her ninth goal of the year. Playle would then get in the goal column in minute 42 with an unassisted tally, her team-leading 13
th of the year, putting the Valiants back on top 3-2. The Valiants would protect the lead the rest of the way, with Monahan adding an insurance tally in the 54
th minute off a feed from Panzer off a penalty corner for the sophomore's second goal of the year.
In net, Harrison was able to turn away all other Neumann shots she saw outside of the two second quarter goals. The sophomore keeper made six saves on the night to earn her third win of the season. Monahan would also earn a defensive save, her first of the year.
The Valiants held a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners and outshot the Knights 25-10 in the contest.
