Women's Tennis Celebrates Senior Day Against Mount Saint Mary

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Playing their second of three matches for the week, the Manhattanville College women's tennis team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday against Mount Saint Mary. A hard-fought effort by the Valiants came up just short, as Manhattanville dropped the 5-4 decision to fall to 0-6 (0-5 Skyline) on the year.

Ahead of the opening serve, the Valiants honored four graduating members of the roster: Veteran Ella Brown (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich), Alana Anderson (Wellington, Fla./Palm Beach Central), who joined the team at the start of the year, and Ally Petricca (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) and Victoria McCaffrey (Norwalk, Conn. /Brien McMahon), who had both joined the roster midseason.

Following the ceremony, there was tennis to be played. Manhattanville would go 1-2 in the three doubles matches. The win would come in a great contest in the No. 3 position, as the duo of Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and Anderson would outlast Blanca Ayala Santana and Victoria Veloz-Vicioso with an 8-7 vicotry, earning the match point following a 7-5 tiebreaker.

Brown teamed up with Bea Pretnar (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Soundview Prep) in the No. 1 position, falling to Julia Flynn and Sadie McNair 3-8. The Valiants duo of Victoria Szele (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich High School) and Keto Karkashadze (), meanwhile, would be blanked in No. 2 Doubles by Carly Green and Victoria Valencia, 0-8.

The one-point deficit would prove to be the difference maker as the teams split the six singles contests. In the first match to finish, Petricca celebrated Senior Day with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 6 position over Veloz-Vicioso. After Brown was bested by McNair in the No. 3 flight, 2-6, 4-6, Pretnar would even the match score at 3-3 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Flynn in the No. 1 position. Mount Saint Mary would pull one point away from victory following a 6-2, 6-4 win by Green over Szele in the No. 2 flight, but the Valiants would even the day at four wins apiece as Anderson defeated Valencia 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 5 flight. The match came down to the No. 4 position, as the Knights would earn the win as Ayala Santana bested Karkashadze 6-4, 6-4.
