PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's soccer team celebrated Senior Night on Wednesday on GoValiants.com Field. Despite the joyous pregame ceremonies, the Valiants were unable to end the night with a win, falling to the visiting SUNY New Paltz 2-0. With the loss, the Valiants fall to 6-7-1 on the year.
Before the opening kickoff, the graduating Class of 2023—
Natalie Aracena (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale Kingsbride Academy),
Dori Grasso (Shelton, Conn./St. Joseph),
Veronica Lage (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland),
Izzy Rosa (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and
Jennifer Xiong (Connelly Springs, N.C./East Burke)—were honored with a pregame ceremony. The five were surrounded by family and friends as their collegiate accolades were celebrated prior to game time.
As for the game itself, the visiting Hawks netted a pair of first half goals that would account for all of the night's offense. In the 10
th minute, Ally Donovan scored off an assist by Rachel Eisert to put New Paltz on the board. In the 23
rd minute, Donovan struck again, this time off Siena Diaz-Colon's assist, to double the Hawks' lead.
The Valiants were unable to respond, being held to just seven total shots on the night. Four of the shot attempts would be on net, but Maddie Franklin was a wall in net for the Hawks, turning them all away.
Macey Girard (Branford, Conn./Branford) did everything she could to keep Manhattanville in the game, making 10 stops across a full 90 minutes of work. It was the freshman's third game this season with 10 or more saves, her first since Sept. 14 against Kean.
It was the seniors that led the offensive effort for the Valiants, as Grasso threw three shots on goal while Aracena accounted for the fourth. Rosa would also have a shot on the night alongside
Caitlin White (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and
Alessia Cioffi (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling).
The Hawks earned a narrow 3-1 corner kick advantage.
