PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – For the second time in the last four days, the Manhattanville College women's soccer team made the trip down to Patchogue to take on Saint Joseph's-Long Island.
Wednesday's trek to Long Island was not an enjoyable one. The Valiants suffered a 1-0 loss to the Golden Eagles that knocked Manhattanville down to the fifth seed for the Skyline Conference Championship, losing home field advantage in the opening round. More so, it set up a first round rematch for the Valiants against the same team that just held them scoreless.
As the adage goes, it's hard to beat the same team twice.
With the rest of the week to reflect and learn from the loss, the Valiants made the most of their return to Danzi Stadium on Saturday, defeating Saint Joseph's-Long Island 2-1 and advancing to the Skyline Conference Semifinals. Manhattanville now sets up a clash with top-seeded Sarah Lawrence on Wednesday night.
The Golden Eagles got the contest started on the right foot for the home team as Alyssa Ramcke was able to head in an Abbey Curcio corner in the second minute to give Saint Joseph's the early advantage.
Undeterred by the early hole, the Valiants responded shortly after with shots by
Caitlin Ward (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown High School) and
Veronica Lage (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland). While both went high, with Ward's shot ringing off the crossbar, the Valiants continued to swing the action onto the other side of the field. In the 28
th minute, the Valiants were able to draw a pair of back-to-back corner kicks in quick succession. It would be the second one that mattered most, as
Natalie Aracena (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale Kingsbride Academy) was able to perfectly curve the kick to score directly off the corner, tying the game at 1-1 with her fifth goal of the season.
The 1-1 score carried into the second half, with
Macey Girard (Branford, Conn./Branford) stopping the only other Golden Eagle shot she saw in the first 45. As it turned out, it would be all she would see as Saint Joseph's would be held without a shot in the second half. Manhattanville, meanwhile, continued to apply pressure with six shots.
The sustained pressure finally paid off in the 69
th minute as
Izzy Rosa (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) made her way to a loose ball just outside the box. The senior was able to fire a shot past a diving Mikayla Ritter to give the Valiants the lead with 20 minutes to play.
With their first lead of the day, the Valiants continue to control the pace of the game with four more shot attempts to close out the contest. With the Golden Eagles unable to clear the ball and generate an offensive opportunity, Manhattanville was able to drain the remaining clock out and secure the victory.
Aracena and Rosa led the offensive effort with three shots each, with all three of Aracena's attempts going on goal.
Morgan Passley (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) and
Alessia Cioffi (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) also recorded shots on net in the win as the Valiants outshot the Golden Eagles 11-5. Corner kicks were 4-3 in favor of Saint Joseph's.
