PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team were defeated by Atlantic East opponent, Cabrini University, on Wednesday evening, 9-2. With this loss, the Valiants fall to 3-6 on the season and are now 0-1 to begin conference play.
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Maggie Cella scored the first Cabrini goal off of a penalty corner within the first two minutes of the match. Daly Ewing would then score the next two goals in the 3
rd and 10
th minute to put the Cavaliers up, 3-0. A minute later, Olivia Sims would tally an unassisted goal off of a penalty corner shot and rebound.
A weather delay would then push the match to resume after 50 minutes. Soon after, Caroline Gallagher would join in on the action and record a goal in the 14
th minute to keep the score at 5-0 going into the second period. Manhattanville would be shut out without a single shot taken during the first 15 minutes.
In the second period, a slow start would then present another goal by Cella in the 18
th minute. This would be answered by
Megan Keaveney (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) who would put the first goal on the board for Manhattanville off an assist by
Felicity Williams (Glen Falls, N.Y./Glen Falls) in the 24
th minute. At the half, Cabrini would be up 6-1.
Coming back from the half, Julia Flaherty would have back-to-back goals in the 35
th and 37
th minute, assisted by Gallagher to improve the Cavaliers lead to 8-1.
Later on in the last period, during the 53
rd minute, Adrianna Jones would score Cabrini's ninth goal of the evening off of a Manhattanville save. To end all scoring, in the 58
th minute,
Abbey Playle (Reading, England/Leigh High School) would tally an unassisted goal after splitting the Cabrini defense to conclude the match, 9-2. For Playle, it was her team-leading 12th goal of the season.
Overall, Cabrini had 23 shots with 15 on goal and Manhattanville had six shots, three on goal, with six combined saves, with
Florence Harrison (Melbourne, Australia/Balwyn High School) and
Cat Morgan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior) splitting duties in cage. Harrison got the start, making one stop and surrendering four goals prior to the weather stoppage before Morgan took over to resume play.
Amanda Benedetti (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and Cabrini's Sara Hussey each recorded a defensive save in the first half. Cabrini held a 14-5 advantage in penalty corners over the Valiants.
Manhattanville will continue conference play on Saturday at 11 a.m. against St. Mary's College of Maryland.
