ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Meeting for the first time in 22 years, the Manhattanville College field hockey team was defeated by St. Mary's College of Maryland earlier on Saturday by a final of 9-1. The loss drops the Valiants to 3-7 on the season and 0-2 in Atlantic East play.
Manhattanville scored on their opening shot of the day 64 seconds into the contest as
Ava Panzer (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) scored her eighth goal of the season. However, the rest of the contest would be dominated by the Seahawks, as the Valiants would not get another shot in the remainder of the game.
St. Mary's, meanwhile, fired 33 shots on the day, 21 of which were on net. Taking 11 shots in the first quarter alone, the Seahawks tied the game in the 6
th minute off Celina Kaufman's ninth goal of the year before Jill Hayden put the home team up in the 12
th minute. The Seahawks doubled up their score before the half on a pair of Brenna Ziegler tallies in the second quarter.
Kaufman opened up a three-goal St. Mary's third quarter in the 34
th minute before assisting on Anelina Arter's tally 26 second later. Anna Eaton would then close out the quarter with a goal of her own to put the Seahawks ahead 7-1. Ziegler and Hayden Kesner would add one more goal apiece in the fourth to close out the day for St. Mary's.
It was a busy day for Manhattanville defenders with the majority of the game taking place on the Valiants' side of the field.
Cat Morgan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior) got the start in net, playing 39:41 with a season-high 10 saves.
Lidia Vasquez-Sinisi (Selden, N.Y./Newfield H.S.) played the final 20-plus minutes, making one save.
Florence Harrison (Melbourne, Australia/Balwyn High School) also got involved in the defensive effort, as the frequent goalkeeper logged a defensive save as a member of the Manhattanville backline.
The Valiants were awarded two penalty corners on the day compared to the 10 by the hosting Seahawks.
