Women's Basketball Dominant in 102-21 Victory Over Pratt

PURCHASE, N.Y. – In one of the most dominant performances ever seen on the court of Kennedy Gymnaisum, the Manhattanville College women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the year following a 102-21 victory over Pratt Institute on Monday evening. The 81-point margin of victory is the largest recorded in the full-season program records, dating back to the 1978-79 season. The Valiants were just two points shy of tying the program record for most points in a single game, a record of 104 recorded last season against Five Towns and in 1980 against New Paltz.

The Valiants moved the ball around plenty, with 13 of the 14 players stepping on the court recording a point. It would actually be Bridget Basile (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) off the bench that led the offensive output, as the rookie scored 15 in her 13 minutes of play. Basile shot 5-of-7 from the field, going 3-for-4 from deep, while collecting five rebounds and dishing out five assists. Jamison Agostino (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), who led the Valiant offense in their season-opening win last week, scored 13 on a 5-for-12 night. Angela Downey (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) and Esther Ramos (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) would score 10 apiece off the bench to round out the top scorers for the night.

Manhattanville outrebounded Pratt 59-32. Julianna Kascic (North Bergen, N.J./Paramus Catholic) led the board effort, pulling down an impressive nine rebounds in just 13 minutes of action. Five of Kascic's boards would come off the offensive glass. Kristen Scrobola (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas High School) collected seven caroms, while Ramos, Niyona Smith (Baltimore, MD/Concordia Prep) and Leah Morawski (Northport, N.Y./Northport) each joined Basile with five rebounds.

Livi Correia (North Attleboro, Mass./Worcester Academy) had a team-high six steals while dishing out three assists and collecting three rebounds. Basile would be the team's leader in assists with her five helpers, while Amanda Orlando (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) had four.

Despite what the final score may indicate, it took the Valiants a bit to get going. Correia struck first with an opening three pointer, beginning a 6-0 run. The score would be just 6-3 through the opening 5:21 before a pair of Smith free throws started another run for the Valiants. Correia and Smith each added a basket before Scrobola hit a layup and a free throw to close out the quarter with a 15-3 Manhattanville advantage. Pratt shot 1-for-15 from the field in the quarter, with their only points coming from a Victoria Liu deep ball.

After another 6-3 run to begin the second, the Valiants began to click, going on an 18-2 run over the final 6:37 of the half. Manhattanville shot 42 percent over the opening 20 minutes compared to the 12 percent success rate of the Cannoneers. The last Pratt basket of the half came with 3:55 remaining as the Valiants scored 10 unanswered points, capped off by a Downey three at the buzzer to pull ahead 40-8.

Manhattanville continued firing in the second half to the tune of a 52 percent mark from the field. Inversely, Pratt went 2-for-24 in the second half, shooting eight percent from the field. The Valiants opened up the half on a 19-1 run that lasted the opening 6:11 of the third quarter. Basile put the finishing touches on a quarter that saw the home team outscore the visitors 30-5 with a three pointer that beat the buzzer, extending Manhattanville's lead to 57 at 70-13.

The Valiants still saved their best for last, shooting 59 percent over the final 10 minutes to the tune of 32 points. Manhattanville drained three straight shots from beyond the arc to open the quarter, kickstarting an 18-1 run. The Valiants closed out the night on a 14-4 run, earning the 102-21 win.
