RYE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's hockey team remains undefeated on the young season with a 2-0 shutout win over Arcadia University on Friday evening. With the victory, the Valiants move to 5-0-0 overall on the season and in UCHC play. The start to the season is the team's best since the 2006-07 campaign when the Valiants also won their first five games to begin the year.
Manhattanville fired 31 shots on net in the win, while
Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) stopped 19 Arcadia shots. She picked up her third shutout of the 2022-23 campaign while keeping a clean sheet with a .00 goals-against average and 1.000 save percentage.
It was a back-and-forth battle to start off early as 16 minutes went by before Manhattanville's
Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy) tallied the first goal of her collegiate career. It was a quick approach to the net with three defenders closing in, a nice shot up and over the Arcadia goalkeeper Jo Coates' shoulder. The goal came off of assists from
Erica Sandilands (Winnipeg, Man./Balmoral Hall Blaze (JWHL)) and
Lillee Dougherty (Wakefield, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey School).
In the second period, with a power play in progress, the Valiants would use the numbers to their advantage. After some good offensive movement, with only seven seconds left in the penalty,
Holly Meredith (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Vermont Academy) would fire a shot from out front and connect for the second Manhattanville goal of the game, and her second of the season.
Brysha Schmidt (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./The Millbrook School) and
Gabrielle Cox (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane High School) would contribute with assists.
The final 20 minutes would show a strong defensive front from the Valiants as they controlled the ice and held the Knights scoreless with only 10 total shots taken in the third period. The Manhattanville offense tallied 19 shots on goal but nothing more would come of it as the final horn sounded for a 2-0 Manhattanville win.
It was yet another successful night in the faceoff circle for the Valiants winning 31 draws to Arcadia's 20.
Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy) led the way with ten draws, while
Grace Felicio (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and
Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) won nine and eight, respectively.
Manhattanville went 1-for-4 on the power play, firing nine shots and scoring a goal. On the other side of the ice, the Valiants went a perfect 2-for-2 on the penalty kill against the Knights with only three shots taken.
The two teams will run it back tomorrow, as the Valiants and Knights drop the puck at Playland Ice Casino at 1 p.m.
