RYE, N.Y. – In their second overtime game of the season, the Manhattanville College men's hockey team would notch their first extra period win in a thrilling end against Stevenson, 5-4, on Saturday evening. With the win, the Valiants improve to 4-2-0 on the season and in conference play.
Manhattanville had four different goal scorers on the day, but the most pivotal one was
AJ Bella (Norwalk, Conn./Connecticut Roughriders (EHL)), the junior forward who scored the winning goal in overtime for the Valiants.
The Mustangs would win the initial faceoff in OT but once the puck was in Manhattanville's possession, three shots would be taken ahead of the winning goal. While on the power play, Bella would receive a dish from
James Gregory (Darien, Conn./Connecticut Roughriders (EHL)) and fire a shot for a goal to bring an end to the contest 1:21 into overtime.
As for regulation, scoring would begin in the first period at 15:22 when Stevenson's Zach Egber would get the early 1-0 lead off an assist from Nick Dineen. Manhattanville would be held scoreless through the first period, with only eight shots fired.
In the second period, the Mustangs would get some insurance at 12:52 as John Musella would score off of assists from Graeme McCrory and Sam Myers for Stevenson's second goal of the day. The Valiants would respond quickly after with a
Mason Emoff (Collingwood, Ont./Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL), Pembroke Lumberkings (CCHL)) goal at 14:30 with assists from both
Glynn Robitaille (Northville, Mich./Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)) and
Lane Paddison (100 Mile House, Canada/Canmore Eagles (AJHL)) to bring the score to 2-1 going into the third period.
In the final 20 minutes, after only a minute of play, Emoff would score his second goal of the game short-handed and unassisted to tie it up at 2-2. 14 seconds later, Evan Beers for Stevenson would score in the power play off of assists from Eric Olson and Malcolm Palmer to take a 3-2 lead with plenty of time left. Later at 13:07,
Nick Prestia (Niagara Falls, Ont./Pickering Panthers (OJHL)) would get his third goal of the season off of assists from Emoff and Robitaille to tie the game back up once again. 40 seconds later,
Josh Fletcher (Calgary, Alb./Kindersley Klippers (SJHL)) would break away for an unassisted goal to take the first Manhattanville lead of the game, 4-3. With less than two minutes left in regulation, a pass would come from the Mustangs' Jack Karlsson for a short-handed goal from Liam McCanney to tie the score 4-4. As the clock ran down, overtime would be on the horizon.
After playing in yesterday's game,
Sebastian Woods (Limehouse, Ontario, Canada/Utica Jr. Comets (NCDC)) got the start in net again for the Valiants. The freshman goalkeeper made 24 saves in the victory and has moved to 4-0-0 on the season.
Stevenson held a 35-27 advantage in the faceoff circle while Manhattanville had a team-high nine draws from Speerbrecker and Fletcher added seven.
Manhattanville went 1-for-6 on the power play and firing seven shots during the advantage. In the penalty kill, they went 4-for-5 with five shots coming from Stevenson and a goal scored on the third disadvantage.
The Valiants will hit the road and head to New Haven, Conn. on Tuesday afternoon to take on Albertus Magnus College at 4 p.m. before the holiday break.
