NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Seeing a non-conference opponent for the first time this season, the Manhattanville College men's hockey team was bested on the road by Albertus Magnus on Tuesday afternoon, 2-1. The loss drops the Valiants' record on the season to 4-3-0.
It was a tightly contested affair in the Nutmeg State, but the hosting Falcons struck with the first two goals of the game to put the Valiants in a hole that they were ultimately unable to come back from. Alex Gagnon lit the lamp five minutes into the opening period, firing in a shot from Tyler Ignazzitto and Bailey Kirwin. With Albertus dominating possession in the opening 20 minutes to the tune of a 15-4 shot discrepancy, the game was in jeopardy of slipping away.
Tyler Roy (Brighton, MI/Neumann University) was able to bounce back from the early surrendered goal, making 14 saves in the frame to keep the Valiants deficit to just the one goal at the end of the period.
It would take 7:27 into the second period for scoring to resume as Isnazzitto doubled the Falcons' lead with a tally assisted by Gagnon and Connor Bertamini. That would be all that Roy would allow, as the senior tender did everything he could to keep game close. In all, Roy finished with 41 saves, a new high for his Manhattanville career.
The Valiants would ultimately get on the board 16:21 into the second.
Parker Chadwell (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Juniors (USPHL)) notched his first career point with the goal, finishing a sequence set up by feeds from
Noah Bradley (Lancaster, Pa./Philadelphia Revolution (EHL)) and
Hayden Taylor (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Islanders Hockey Club (NCDC)). Bradley collected his second helper of the season with the primary assist, while for Taylor it marked his third of the year.
Manhattanville would head into the third period down by one and turned up the offensive pressure. The team generated a game-high 16 shots in the period, outshooting the Falcons by six over the final 20 minutes of play. Despite getting more puck on net, the Valiants were unable to get one past Logan Bateman who stopped all 16 shots in the period. Manhattanville pulled Roy for an extra attacker with 1:14 left in regulation, but despite getting three shot attempts with the extra man, only
Connor Boyce (St. Albans, Vt./Connecticut RoughRiders (EHL)) was able to get a shot through traffic. Bateman turned away the shot attempt as the final horn sounded to preserve the 2-1 win for Albertus Magnus.
Bradley,
Troy Crosson (Hatfield, Pa./New Jersey Rockets (NCDC)), and
Dan Barry (St. Louis, Missouri/Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)) would each finish with a team-high four saves. The Falcons held a narrow 32-30 advantage on faceoffs on the day.
Raymond Speerbrecker (Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada/Revelstoke Grizzlies (KIJHL)) was the Valiants' leading man in the circle, winning 11 of his 15 draws.
The Valiants went 0-for-1 on the power play, with their lone chance with the extra man being an abbreviated 47 seconds in the third period. Conversely, the Manhattanville penalty kill went a perfect 3-for-3, allowing no goals on the Falcons' 12 shots.
