Women’s Hockey Bested By Chatham, 2-1

PITTSBURGH, PA. – The Manhattanville College women's hockey team suffered their first conference loss of the season on Friday evening, dropping a 2-1 contest to Chatham University. With the loss, the Valiants fall to 6-4-0 overall on the season and 6-1-0 in UCHC conference play.

After a scoreless first and second period, both the Valiants and Cougars would find the back of the net, combining for three tallies across the final five minutes of regulation.

Chatham struck first as the Cougars' Allison Corser-James scored the first goal of the night off an assist from Ashley Marchant with 4:12 remaining. Despite the gut punch to fall behind late the Valiants quickly responded. With less than two minutes left in regulation, Gabrielle Cox (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane High School) would tie it up off of assists from Holly Meredith (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Vermont Academy) and Grace Felicio (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional). The goal, Cox's 13th of the year, snaps a five game scoreless drought for the senior forward.

With the Valiants finding the equalizer late, the contest seemed destined for overtime, but Chatham had one last trick up their sleeves. Corser-James struck again, notching her second goal of the game would come with only 32.5 seconds left on the clock. As the time ticked down, the Valiants fired two more shots, with Cox's shot on net saved and Taylor Willoughby's (Camrose, Alberta, Canada/John Maland) follow-up blocked away to suffer the loss.

Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) made 25 saves on the night, while only allowing two goals. The senior netminder stands at 4-4 on the season with a .87 goals-against average and a .968 save percentage.

Manhattanville was 1-for-4 on the power play, firing four shots overall and on the other side of the ice, successfully killed all three of Chatham's advantages.

The faceoff circle was evenly matched as the Valiants won 26 of the night's 53 faceoffs, led by 11 wins from Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy). Miller would also lead the team in shots on the night with six.

Chatham's Sam Brophy finished with 35 saves on the night to hold the Valiant offense in check. Manhattanville outshot the Cougars on the night, 36-27.

The Valiants will look to bounce back against Chatham tomorrow at 7 p.m.
