PITTSBURGH, Pa. – On the ice for the last time in 2022, the Manhattanville College women's hockey team snapped a four game losing streak on Saturday night with a 3-2 win at Chatham. The victory splits the weekend series with the Cougars as the Valiants improve to 7-4-0 on the year with a 7-1-0 record in the UCHC.
Manhattanville staked claim to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Rookie
Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy) scored her second goal of the year to open up the scoring, finishing an assisted from
Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) 4:31 into the contest. At 9:24, captain
Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy) would double the Valiant lead to 2-0 as she lit the lamp for the seventh time this season off a
Lindsay Reyes (Chino Hills, Calif./SUNY Cortland) assist.
The Cougars wasted no time in the second to score their first of the night as it took Ally Nolan 18 seconds following the initial puck drop to put Chatham on the board. Less than two minutes later, the game would be tied as Lauren Carmody fired in a feed from Rainey Jessup to bring the game to a 2-2 tie.
Determined to leave Pittsburgh with a win after last night's heartbreaker,
Gabrielle Cox (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane High School) put an end to Chatham's scoring streak by taking a pass from Reyes while on the power play and knocking the puck past Sam Brophy 11:17 into the second to account for the final score of the night. Cox's 14
th goal of the season would be her second game-winner on the year, with her first coming in the season opener against King's.
The final score did not tell the story of the game as the Valiants dominated possession and offensive chances by outshooting Chatham 56-27. It was the second-most shots that Manhattanville had recorded in a game this season. Cox led the way with eight shots followed by seven off the stick of
Brysha Schmidt (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./The Millbrook School). Brophy had a great showing in net for Chatham despite the loss, totaling 53 saves against the explosive Manhattanville attack.
On the other side of the ice,
Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) recorded the win for Manhattanville with a 25 save performance. The senior goaltender made 12 saves in a scoreless third period to preserve the win. Gerardi is now 5-4-0 in the cage with a 1.00 goals-against average on the season.
The Valiants went 1-for-2 on their power play chances, firing eight total shots with the extra skater. The Manhattanville penalty kill was a perfect 2-for-2, limiting Chatham to four total shot attempts on their power plays.
Faceoffs finished 31-27 in favor of the Cougars. Miller had the most success on the dot for Manhattanville, winning 10 of her 21 draws.
