RYE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's hockey team was defeated by Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon, 8-4. With the loss, the Valiants fall to 5-5-0 overall and 5-3-0 in UCHC conference play.
Manhattanville started the scoring for the afternoon in the third minute of the game off of an unassisted
Noah Bradley (Lancaster, Pa./Philadelphia Revolution (EHL)) goal. Alvernia would respond five minutes later to tie it up off of their own unassisted goal from Lucas Ochitwa. During the man advantage in the 13
th minute, the Valiants would go up 2-1 after
Connor Boyce (St. Albans, Vt./Connecticut RoughRiders (EHL)) tallied one of his own, assisted by
Nick Prestia (Niagara Falls, Ont./Pickering Panthers (OJHL)) and
Dylan Pollak (New Fairfield, Conn./Selects Academy (18U AAA)). The Golden Wolves would feel the pressure and find themselves on a hot streak. Alvernia's Gabriel Malek would score off an assist from Jordan Gagnon in the 15
th minute followed by a power play goal from Isaac Chapman dished out by Peter Falivena and Matthew Davies to finish the first period, 3-2.
In the second period, Alvernia would continue to dominate the ice as a Lucas Kirk goal, assisted by Brendan McBride and Hunter Alden, would be scored in the 4
th minute. Less than 60 seconds later, Chapman would find the back of the net for the second time to put the Golden Wolves up, 6-2. In yet another power play for Manhattanville, Boyce would score his second goal similar to that of the first period.
The final 20 minutes would show plenty of back and forth on the ice before Alvernia would get on the board once again. In the 11
th minute, Max Cole would score off of a dish from Kirk and soon after, Falivena would get one as well off an assist from Chapman. Manhattanville was able to get one more before the clock ran down as
Mitchell Watson (Calgary Alberta, Canada/Canmore Eagles (AJHL)) would score the final Valiant goal of the day off of assists from
Raymond Speerbrecker (Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada/Revelstoke Grizzlies (KIJHL)) and
Artem Mateichenko (Kharkov, Ukraine/New Hampshire Avalanche (EHL)). Alvernia would have one more trick up their sleeve as
Tyler Roy (Brighton, MI/Neumann University) would be pulled from the Manhattanville goal. Andrew Bechard would take a shot from the neutral zone and score, unassisted. The Golden Wolves would come out victorious, 8-4 to get back to .500 in conference play.
Sebastian Woods (Limehouse, Ontario, Canada/Utica Jr. Comets (NCDC)) would start the game in net for the Valiants and tally 17 saves on the day before Roy would take over for the rest of the game and make16 saves himself. Colin Cain finished with 27 saves on the night for the Golden Wolves.
Manhattanville was 2-for-6 on the power play, firing eight shots overall and on the other side of the ice, went 1-for-2 on the penalty kill against Alvernia.
The Valiants won 32 of the night's 66 draws, with an evenly matched faceoff circle as Speerbrecker led the team with 14 draws.
The Valiants will be back on the ice at 1 p.m. on New Year's Eve for the Middlebury Holiday Classic.
