Women’s Basketball Stays Undefeated After 70-33 Win Over Old Westbury

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team improved to 8-0 on the season after a 70-33 victory over Old Westbury on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Valiants match their season-opening win streak from a year ago while improving to 5-0 in Skyline Conference play.

The Valiants began the night on a 16-point run with the first nine points coming from the Skyline Conference Player of the Week, Julianna Kascic (North Bergen, N.J./Paramus Catholic). Jamison Agostino (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) added a 3-pointer, while Angela Downey (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) and Gabby Tucker (Port Chester, N.Y./Blind Brook) both tallied a layup. With 4:20 remaining in the first period, Old Westbury's Allysha Thomas would score the Panther's first basket of the game. Agostino would add three more from the arc and Tyela Davidson would sink a jumper as the clock ticked down. Manhattanville would lead, 27-4, going into the second.

The second period would start off as a slow back-and-forth with not much offensive action on either end. Then with five minutes remaining in the half, Old Westbury's Ja'nya Flash would get scoring started once again with a made free throw and a layup. Manhattanville responded with a basket, followed by a six-point run for the Panthers. The Valiants would score three more before halftime, heading into the locker room up, 32-13.

The Panthers would get on the board first in the third period off a Melinda Harris layup. Manhattanville would then score five straight before Old Westbury would score one on a made free throw by Davidson. Small runs made by the Valiants would become a theme as they scored six more. After trading baskets for a bit, Manhattanville would go on a 12-point run before Old Westbury's Gianna Ventiere would swish a 3-pointer at the buzzer to go into the final ten minutes. Manhattanville would stay up, 57-23.

In the final period, Old Westbury would score first off a free throw from Shannon Myles. Agostino would then make her seventh three-pointer of the night, followed by two more from the Green and White. The Valiants would score four more before the Panthers would have their first run of the night with five points, followed by two layups from rookie guard Gabby Tucker (Port Chester, N.Y./Blind Brook). Myles would make two more free throws to wrap up Old Westbury scoring for the night. Esther Ramos (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) would drop a bucket in the final seconds as Manhattanville would come out victorious 70-33 with their eighth straight win.

Kascic had a tremendous night with a season-high 24 points and her fourth double-double of the season. Agostino also had a career-night with 21 points.

The Valiants outshot the Panthers 27-11 from the field and 8-1 from the arc, while Old Westbury was 58.8% from the charity stripe and Manhattanville only shot 53.3%.

The Valiants will be back on the court for their final home game of the year on Saturday at 2 p.m. against conference foe, Farmingdale State.
