RYE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's hockey team snapped a four-game losing streak on Friday afternoon, picking up a 3-0 shutout win over Stevenson. With the victory, the Valiants improve to 11-8-1 on the year and 11-5 in the UCHC.
The Valiants fired 48 shots on net in the win, while
Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) stopped all 21 pucks that came her way. The junior netminder earned her third shutout of the season, dropping her goals-against average on the year to 2.64 while her save percentage climbs to .919.
With Gerardi turning away everything thrown her direction, the Valiants would be able to use a pair of power play goals in the first period to earn the win. With the game still scoreless 15:39 into the opening frame, Nikki Kendrick was sent to the box for interference. Manhattanville wasted no time capitalizing on the open ice, as it took just 18 seconds for
Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy) to bury a pass from
Grace Genest (Wake Forest, N.C./The Gunnery (Conn.)) and put the home team ahead.
Just under two minutes later, the Mustangs would be down a skater again following a tripping call on Ally Gibson. Manhattanville was able to make Stevenson pay for the penalty once again as
Gabrielle Cox (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane High School) scored an unassisted goal 57 seconds into the power play at 18:43. The 2-0 lead would hold all the way into the third.
Manhattanville got 17 shots in the second, but Olivia DeGuire was able to stop them all to keep it a two score game. The Valiants continued the pressure into the third with another 17 shots, with Miller striking again at 11:58 off a feed from
Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) to net an insurance goal. From there, Gerardi slammed the door shut to earn three UCHC points and move into third in the standings.
