PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women;s basketball team had their winning streak come to an end at three on Tuesday night, being defeated by Mount Saint Mary 80-71. The loss moves the Valiants to 16-7 on the year and 12-6 in the Skyline Conference with two games left in the regular season.
Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) led the offense with 20 points, shooting 50 percent o the night both from the field and from beyond the arc. The graduate student sank four shots from deep while also dishing out three assists.
Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) added 17 points with eight rebounds, while
Jamison Agostino (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) had 11 while connecting on three shots beyond the arc.
Niyona Smith (Towson, MD/Concordia Prep) led the play under the basket with 14 rebounds, her sixth time in her rookie season she has reached double figures off the glass. Johnson-Desilvia's eight were second on the team this night, while
Claudia Valentin (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin School) and
Kristen Scrobola (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas High School) both contributed five.
In a game that saw 17 lead changes, it was a tale of two halves of the fourth quarter that decided this one. The Valiants entered the final 10 with a 59-58 lead after a Valentine basket in the closing seconds of the third put the home team up. Manhattanville scored the first six points of the final quarter over the opening 2:08 to go ahead 65-58, their biggest lead of the night. The Knights responded with a Katie Smith layup and called a timeout to reevaluate. The decision proved to be a good one, as the Knight went on a 19-3 run to jump back ahead by nine for their largest advantage of the night with 2:15 to go. Agostino responded with a three to pull back within six, but the Valiants were only able to get one more shot in the remainder of regulation as the Knights completed the regular season sweep.
