Women's Basketball Erases 14 Point Deficit in Win Over Mount Saint Vincent

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team recovered from a slow start in Thursday night's contest, overcoming a 14-point first quarter deficit to earn a 49-37 win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent. With the victory, the Valiants improve to 17-7 on the year and are 13-6 in Skyline Conference play.

Carmen Rosemond (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) had one of her best overall performances of the season in the victory. The junior forward scored eight on a 4-of-6 shooting night, her most points scored since Jan. 22 against Old Westbury. Rosemond also contributed seven rebounds, coming one shy of her season-high.

Ali Mikaele (Silver Spring, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School) also had a very efficient night, leading the Valiants with 15 points and eight rebounds. She was 5-for-6 from the field and matched that performance from the charity stripe while pulling down four boards on both the offensive and defensive side.

Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) had a team-high four steals while dishing out four assists, tied for the most on the team in the night with Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton). Speaking of Shore, the graduate student guard scored all six of her points from beyond the arc.

Manhattanville was just 1-for-9 in the first quarter as the Dolphins looked to put the Valiants in the dust quickly. Mount Saint Vincent, meanwhile, shot 47 percent over the opening 10 minutes, using a 14-0 run to go ahead 16-2. Manhattanville was able to inch closer before the buzzer after a pair of Jamison Agostino (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) free throws, but the home team had work to do to get back into the game.

Despite the poor start, it was a role reversal in the second quarter that allowed the Valiants to come storming back. The Dolphins would hit just one of their 12 field goal attempts in the quarter and scored just four total points. Manhattanville, meanwhile, shot 44 percent over the ensuing 10 minutes, going on a 13-2 run to pull back to within one after Kristen Scrobola's (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas High School) layup made it an 18-17 game with 4:32 remaining. The Dolphins got their last two points of the half from a pair of Amber Been free throws, but the Valiants ended the half with an Agostino layup and a Shore three pointer to take their first lead of the night heading into the half.

The trend continued into the third with a 62 percent shooting effort in the third quarter for the Vals. Manhattanville opened up the half with a 6-0 run to go ahead 28-20. While the Dolphins would cut the deficit down to three with 6:24 in the quarter, the Valiants pieced together a 7-0 run to pull ahead 37-27. The ten-point advantage would carry into the fourth, with Manhattanville up 43-33.

The Dolphins rattled off the first two baskets of the fourth before Manhattanville responded with three straight field goals of their own, going back on top 49-37 with 6:40 remaining. The game would be officially ended with 6:20 remaining in regulation following a Mount Saint Vincent injury.
