READING, Pa. – The Manhattanville College men's lacrosse season started with a win on Saturday, as he Valiants picked up an 11-6 win at Albright College. The Valiants will start the season 1-0 for the frist time since 2019 as head coach
Kyle Hayes wins in his inaugural contest leading the team.
Despite being outshot 36-28, the Valiants made the most of their offensive opportunities.
Jesse McGrath (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central),
Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and
Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) all ended the game with multiple goals, with McGrath's five leading the way.
McGrath would open up the scoring four minutes into the game, scoring an unassisted goal to give the Valiants their first score and lead of the season. Albright responded three minutes later on a Shane Early tally before McGrath netted his second, giving the Valiants a 2-1 lead through the first quarter.
After the Lions tied it up again on a Jon Alvarez goal, Manhattanville scored four straight tallies to reclaim a lead they wouldn't look back from. Larkin scored his first of the day off a pass from
Matt Schneider (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) before McGrath struck for a third time with ten minutes to go in the half.
Patrick Magliocchino (Thornwood, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) recorded his first as a Valiant a minute later from a setup by
James Weinbaum (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) before McGrath scored his fourth of the half courtesy of
Joey Vitta (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) to put the Valiants up 6-2. Albright got one back before the end of the half, but the Valiants continued to build on their three goal lead throught he remainder of the game.
The Lions scored first in the third to pull back to within two, but a pair of goals from Cornelia and a Schneider tally gave the Valiants a five goal advantage. Cole Genneken score for Albright to end the third, but McGrath's fifth of the day and an insurance goal by Larkin in the fourth allowed the Valiants to close out the win.
Jason Frezza (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Portledge) got the start in net, making 13 saves for the Valiants in the win. Manhattanville collected 23 ground balls in the contest, led by five by
Kevin Rafferty (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac). Vitta and
Nolan Nye (Emerson, N.J./Emerson Junior-Senior) both were credited with a caused turnover, while
Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) won ten faceoffs for the Vals.
