ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Playing for the first time in the spring semester, the Manhattanville College men's tennis team was defeated by Division II St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday afternoon, 7-0. The loss makes the Valiants 1-1 overall this year in dual match play after the team picked up a win against Pratt Institute back in October.
Because the Spartans are a Division II program, the three doubles matches that STAC won were counted as a single point. The Spartans also swept all six singles matches against the Valiants on the day.
In No. 1 doubles,
James Hourihan (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and
Nick Schlapak (Dover, N.H./Dover) fell to Odysseas Papioannou and Maximilian Kendler 6-1. The score was the same across the other two flights, as
Ryan Rosenberg () and
Luis Gonzalez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) were bested in No. 2 doubles by Lennart Lehmann and Valentin Baranyi and the duo of
Weston Goodwin (Freeport, ME/Freeport High School) and
Dylan Crowley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) fell to Ivan Laiz and Tony Khamassi in the third flight.
In singles, Hourihan got the top flight matchup against Papaioannoiu, falling 6-3, 6-0. Rosenberg and Gonzalez suffered 6-0, 6-0 losses in their singles matches, dropping the flights to Lehmann and Ludovico Truffelli, respectively. Goodwin repped the Vals in No. 4 singles, dropping the 6-0, 6-1 decision to Laiz. Schlapak had the best singles performance for the Valinats, winning four games in a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Baranyi. In the final singles matchup, Crowley fell to Khamassi, 6-2, 6-0.
