ORLANDO, Fla. – Kicking off the team's spring break trip to Florida, the Manhattanville College men's tennis team was bested by Aquinas College on Wednesday, 7-0. The loss will drop the Valiants to 1-2 in 2021-22, and 0-2 in the spring.
Due to the discrepancy in Manhattanville being an NCAA DIII program and Aquinas being an NAIA institution, the doubles flights were played as a best two-out-of-three for a single point. The Saints swept all three duos matches against the Valiants to take the opening point. James Horuihan and
Nick Schlapak (Dover, N.H./Dover) were the Manhattanville representatives in the No. 1 flight, dropping an 8-1 match to Aquinas' Joel Hancox and Max Goldbeck-Lowe. Luiz Gonzalez and
Ryan Rosenberg () teamed up for an 8-3 loss in No. 2 Doubles against Brandon McEachern and Tom Gangov, while
Dylan Crowley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) and
Weston Goodwin (Freeport, ME/Freeport High School) had the best doubles showing over in the third flight, dropping an 8-5 decision to Nicholas Klak and John Elizalde.
Goodwin continued his strong showing in singles play, taking on Joseph Coll Llopis in the fourth flight. After dropping the first set 6-1, the sophomore bounced back with a 6-3 win in set two to force a third. Coll Llopis would ultimately win the deciding set, 10-1.
Elsewhere, Schlapak dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision in the No. 5 singles position to Jackson Vanbergen. Crowley was bested by Mariano Arroyo 6-2, 6-2 in the sixth flight, while Hourihan was edged out by Hancox 6-2, 6-0 in the top flight. Over in the second position, Rosenberg fell to Goldbeck-Lowe 6-0, 6-2. Rounding out the day was Gonzalez in the third position, falling to Simon Uhlen 6-1, 6-0.
