PURCHASE, N.Y. – Five Valiants reached double-figures as the Manhattanville College women's basketball team was victorious in Wednesday night's Battle of Anderson Hill Road against Purchase, defeating the Panthers 88-46. Manhattanville improves to 20-0 all-time against Purchase with the win, moving to 15-6 on the 2021-22 campaign with a 11-5 mark in the Skyline Conference.
With four of Manhattanville's five starters scoring 10 or more points, it was
Niyona Smith (Towson, MD/Concordia Prep) off the bench leading the way with 20. The rookie shot 53 percent (10-of-19) from the field en route to her third game this season with 20 or more points. In two career games against Purchase, Smith has scored 36 points with a .593 shooting percentage.
Claudia Valentin (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin School) scored 12 on a near-perfect shooting night, going 6-for-7.
Ali Mikaele (Silver Spring, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School),
Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) and
Faith Johnson-Desilvia (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) each had 10 points as the foursome got things started with a 25 point first quarter. The Valiants shot .507 as a team, their second-best shooting performance of the season behind only the first meeting of the year against the Panthers.
The Valiants were dominant on the boards, outrebounding Purchase 51-27 on the night. Of the 15 players that saw action for Manhattanville, 14 ended the game with a rebound.
Kristen Scrobola (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas High School) posted a new career-high with 10 rebounds, seven of which came off the offensive glass. Shore had six boards, while
Livi Correia (North Attleboro, Mass./Worcester Academy) also set a personal best after corralling five caroms.
Manhattanville ran out to a seven point lead before the Panthers were able to claw back to within a basket at 11-9 with 4:45 left in the first. Manhattanville would respond with 14 unanswered points before Purchase was able to get back on the board with a pair of closing second free throws. But the damage had been done, as Manhattanville led 25-11 through the opening ten minutes and would never look back.
The Valiants scored 13 straight to open up the second quarter, exploding out to a 38-11 advantage. The Crimson and White outscored the Panthers 22-10 in the quarter, leading by as much as 29. The lead would swell past 30 in the third quarter courtesy of an 8-0 run that put Manhattanville up 61-26. Manhattanville's advantage climbed up to 43 by the time things were said and done.
