D'Angelo's Hat Trick Not Enough as Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team made its 2022 season debut on Thursday afternoon, dropping a home contest to Simmons, 18-8. A string of eight consecutive goals by the Sharks put the Valiants in a hole the team was unable to fight back from.

Marisa D'Angelo (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) had a strong debut for her junior season, scoring three goals to lead the Manhattanville attack. D'Angelo recorded six total shots in the loss, the most in the contest. Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) also put together a three point effort with a pair of goals and an assist.

The Valiants were the first team on the board in the first, as Maura Kelly (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) collected Manhattanville's first goal of the season off an assist from Abbey Playle (Reading, England/Leigh High School) two and a half minutes into the contest. Despite the early deficit the visitors faced, Simmons was quick to shrug it off, tying the game 11 seconds later on a Julia Chausse tally. The first of three Chausse goals on the day began a stretch of eight straight goals by Simmons, putting the Sharks ahead 8-1 early in the second quarter. Abby Stoller scored three times in the Simmons run as part of a six goal performance.

Manhattanville was able to stop the Sharks' run with D'Angelo's first of the day with 11:48 left in the quarter. After Simmons netted another pair, D'Angelo scored her second of the quarter with 6:17 to play. Simmons' Sammi Hogan would score the last goal of the half with 1:23 left on the clock, putting the Sharks up 11-3 through the first 30 minutes.

After Chausse opened up the scoring the second half for Simmons, Brialee Logue (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) scored her first of the year courtesy of Carr's assist. The senior Carr would then score a goal of her own with 5:50 left in the stanza to cut the deficit down to 13-5.
Simmons would bridge the third and fourth quarters with four straight goals. The Valiants would close out the game on a higher note, scoring three of the final four goals over the last eight minutes of play. Caity Bianchi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) was assisted by Ally Petricca (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) with 7:54 to play before Carr netted her second two minutes later. With 1:33 to go, D'Angelo completed her hat trick, bringing the final score to 18-8.

Britney Sorota faced a tough task in net for the Valiants as Simmons recorded 43 shots in the game. The junior goalie responded with 15 saves, setting a new career-high.

Kelly, Sorota, and Kasey Molito (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson Regional) all had four ground balls in the contest to lead the Valiants. Molito was also responsible for four caused turnovers, leading the Manhattanville defensive effort.
