ORLANDO, Fla. – Making the team's first return to action since October, the Manhattanville College women's tennis team was defeated by Aquinas College in the Sunshine State on Wednesday morning. The Valiants fell to the Saints by a final of 7-0.
Facing off against the NAIA institution, the Valiants were swept in the doubles legs as the Saints claimed the initial point of the day. The duo of
Renay Charley (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) and
Bea Pretnar (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Soundview Prep) were shutout in the No. 1 doubles flight by Sofia Gomes and Joska Volder, 8-0.
Kelsey Ulzheimer (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) and
Ella Brown (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) faced a similar fate in the second flight, blanked by Carlota Arzabe and Mimi Pacheco. Vanessa Heylmun and Jenna Hausman were credited with the win in the third flight by default, but the two doubles wins that were played were enough to put the Saints up 1-0.
Aquinas would make a clean run of the six singles flights to close out the contest. Charley fell in top flight to Arzabe, 6-0, 6-1. Pretnar represented the Valiants in No. 2 singles against Volder, being defeated by a final of 6-1, 6-1. Ulzheimer would drop the third flight against Heylmun 6-0, 6-0, while Brown put up a strong fight in the No. 4 position, falling to Hauman 6-1, 6-4. Aquinas earned the last two singles points, credited to Gomez and Pacheco, by default to complete the 7-0 win.
