ORLANDO, Fla. – Playing the team's second match in as many days, the Manhattanville College women's tennis team was defeated by Emerson College in the Sunshine State on Thursday. The 8-1 loss will dorp the Valiants' record to 4-7 overall in the 2021-22 campaign.

Manhattanville's lone point of the match came courtesy of Renay Charley (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) who won a back-and-forth affair in No. 1 singles. The senior squared off with Susie-Jane Wilson, and while Emerson took the first set 6-3, Charley roared back with a 6-4 second set before taking the third 6-1.

In doubles, Charley teamed up with Bea Pretnar (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Soundview Prep) in the first flight against Wilson and Maria Nikolishin, with Emerson earning the point with an 8-2 win. The Valiant duo of Kelsey Ulzheimer (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) and Ella Brown (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) were blanked 8-0 in No. 2 Doubles, while the Lions' Ava Mirisola and Gabrielle McGovern were awarded the win in the third doubles flight by default.

Ulzheimer was the only Valiant outside of Charley to win a game in her singles competition, falling to Anne Woodbury 6-0, 6-1 in the third flight. Pretnar and Brown were defeated 6-0, 6-0 in their flights, falling to Nikolishin and Fuschia Steward, respectively. Emerson also earned the final two singles points by default to complete the victory.

The Valiants were to square off with Ohio Northern University on Thursday afternoon as part of a two-match day, but rain in Florida resulted in a match cancelation. Manhattanville will instead close out the team's spring break trip tomorrow morning against Baldwin Wallace.
