Ciuffetelli and White Toss Gems, Coach Caulfield Earns Win No. 350 In Sweep of Mount Saint Mary

PURCHASE, N.Y. – A pair of pitcher duels capped off by late inning rallies resulted in a Sunday afternoon sweep for the Manhattanville College baseball team over Mount Saint Mary College. The 2-1 wins move the Valiants' record on the season to 14-10 overall and 10-4 against the Skyline Conference. With the victory in the opening game, Head Coach Jeff Caulfield earned the 350th win of his coaching career.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 2, Mount Saint Mary 1
The opener was an extremely quick paced game, as both teams combined for just eight total hits. In fact, the Valiants would be held hitless until the fifth inning resulting in the pair of runs for the home team that led to the win.

Alby Ciuffetelli (Mahopac, N.Y./Yorktown) pitched his longest and best game of the season in the win. The senior tossed a complete seven innings, allowing just five hits and one run while striking out two. The contact-heavy pitcher got nine ground outs to help escape the limited amount of trouble he faced.

Although Ciuffetelli was pitching a gem, the Valiants were having even more trouble with the Knights' Mike Scotto. Mount Saint Mary broke the scoreless tie in the fourth on a Brandon Nolasco RBI single while the Valiants were still looking for their first hit. Manhattanville had yet to get a runner past second base heading into the bottom of the fifth trailing 1-0 before finally breaking through.

Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) delivered the team's first hit in style, drilling a leadoff triple to deep right field. Tyler Viscusi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) wasted no time bringing his teammate home, following up with a single to center to tie the game back up at 1-1. Viscusi would advance to third on a sacrifice bunt and a single before coming home on a Joe McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) sacrifice fly with what would prove to be the game-winning run.

Pitching with his first lead of the day, Ciuffetelli was able to retire six of the final seven batters, allowing just a sixth-inning single as the Valiants claimed the opener.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 2, Mount Saint Mary 1
In a near-repeat of Game One, pitching dominated, the Knights took an early lead, but the Valiants came from behind again to pick up their starter and earn the sweep.

This time it was Ray White (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) with the quality start as it was another strong outing for the rookie. White went a season-high 7.1 innings in the start, allowing a run on six hits and no walks while striking out four. His lone blemish came as part of a two-hit third inning that saw the Knights plate a run on a Michael DiGiovanni ground out. Another groundball pitcher of the Manhattanville rotation, White induced 11 ground outs to keep the Knights at bay.

While the Valiants did not wait as long to get into the hit column in Game Two, with Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) hitting a first inning single, it did take Manhattanville until the seventh to get on the board with a run. Brian Gregory was holding the Valiants in check through his first six innings before finding trouble. Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) reach on a one out single before stealing second and advancing to third on a Gregory balk. With the tying run standing on third, Gregory began to lose the zone, walking Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) and hitting McDonald with a pitch to load the bases. He would leave the game but would be charged for a pair of runs after Anthony Pressimone (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) was hit by a pitch to score Bornkamp and Parisi scored on a fielder's choice hit by Silvestri.

White got the first out in the eighth before giving way to Thomas Iazzetta (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake), who closed things out with a hitless 1.2 innings to earn his fourth save of the year.
