MADISON, N.J. – Scoring five runs in the third inning, the Manhattanville College varsity baseball team took a lead they were able to hold the rest of the way on Wednesday night at Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham, defeating the Devils 9-5. The non-conference win makes the Valiants 15-11 overall on the year.
The Valiants got on the board in the first with a
Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) double that scored
Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge), but it was in the third inning where the Manhattanville bats fully came to life. The Crimson and White plated five runs on five hits, firmly taking control of the road matchup. After leadoff singles by
Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) and
Joe McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood), Bornkamp drove in the first run of the frame with a single of his own. Silvestri followed up with the fourth straight single to open up the inning to score McDonald. The Valiants then executed a double steal that allowed Bornkamp to nab home and give the Valiants a 4-0 lead. The Devils made a pitching change, but Daniel Sedutto would not be greeted kindly, as
Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) smacked a two-run homer to put the Valiants up by six.
The Devils got on the board in the bottom half, as Dylan Hode reached on a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Manhattanville added three more runs in the fifth as
Anthony Pressimone (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) lined a two run single to center before coming around to score on
Gregory Lucien Jr.'s (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) single two batters later.
FDU-Florham was able to make it a game again in the bottom of the fifth, scratching out four runs. However, that would be the last run production by either team, as a scoreless final four innings earned the Valiants the road win. The Valiant arms held the Devils to just three hits over the final four to preserve the victory.
Ian Murray (Commack, N.Y./Commack) earned the win on the mound, pitching four innings in the start while allowing three runs on a pair of hits and striking out three. The bullpen handled the rest of the work, allowing just a pair of unearned runs over five innings of work.
Joseph Lacoparra (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac),
Jackson Branigan (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and
Matthew Messina (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) each got an inning of work, while
Thomas Iazzetta (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) closed things out with a scoreless final two innings.
