PURCHASE, N.Y. – Despite trailing early in both games, the Manhattanville College varsity baseball team scored 27 runs across both ends of Saturday's doubleheader with City College to sweep the pair of contests. The Valiants improved to 17-11 overall on the year with the two wins over the non-conference opponent.
Game One Recap: Manhattanville 9, CCNY 1
The Beavers scored in the top of the first, but the Valiants scored nine unanswered runs to take the opener, bookended by three run innings in the first and sixth.
After falling behind before getting a chance to bat, Manhattanville wasted little time evening the score as
Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first.
Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) followed the long ball up with a single, stealing second and scoring on a
Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) single to put the Valiants ahead. Mandel would score four batters later on
Tyler Viscusi's (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) RBI single with the third run of the inning.
Manhattanville extended their lead with a run in each of the next three innings.
Anthony Pressimone (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) drove home Bornkamp in the third with an RBI double before the senior Bornkamp drove in the run in the third with an RBI single. Viscusi delivered again in the fourth, driving in
Frank Delgado (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) to out the home team up 6-1.
After finally being held scoreless in the fifth, the Valiants scored another three in the sixth inning to put the game on ice. It was Viscusi once again firing the first salvo of the inning with an RBI single that scored
Anthony Caputo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas).
CJ Archul (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) followed with a sacrifice fly to score
Matt Tuite (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) before
Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) tripled to bring Viscusi home with the 9-1 lead.
It was a strong pitching performance by the Valiants, allowing just one run across the seven inning affair.
Alby Ciuffetelli (Mahopac, N.Y./Yorktown) did the bulk of the work, tossing six innings. Outside of the run in the first, the senior shut down the Beavers, allowing seven hits and no walks while striking out four.
Thomas Iazzetta (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) closed out the game with a scoreless seventh inning, striking out one.
Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 18, CCNY 4 (Seven Innings)
The Beavers were once again able to stake claim to a first inning lead before the Valiants responded, scoring in five of the six innings that they came to bat to complete the sweep.
CCNY plated three in their first time at-bat, getting
Ray White's (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) pitching effort off to a rough start. The rookie bounced back from the rocky beginning nicely, throwing four scoreless innings afterwards to rack up his sixth win of the year. White struck out four across his five innings.
Mandel put the home team on the board in the first with a sacrifice fly before taking the lead in the second. With the bases loaded, Bornkamp lined a triple that cleared the bags with three runs scored. Bornkamp then came home shortly after on a passed ball to put the Valiants ahead 5-3.
Manhattanville began to ran away with things over the next two innings with nine more runs crossing the plate. Gregory Lucien, Jr hit an RBI single before Viscusi scored after stealing third.
Anthony Quatrochi (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) brought Lucien, Jr home with a single to center before Pressimone capped off the inning with a two run single. A bases loaded walk and a passed ball scored two more runs in the fourth for Manhattanville before Bornkamp delivered another hit to bring home a pair and extend Manhattanville's lead to 14-3.
The Beavers got one run back in the sixth before the Valiants scored four more runs to close out the game. CCNY's Austin Ortiz struggled on the mound with control, allowing Joseph LaPorta to score on a wild pitch before issuing bases loaded walks to
Brian Alberts (Bronx, N.Y./Iona Prep) and
Brian McBride (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley).
Braden Kunda (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) drove home the 18
th and final run with a fielder's choice that allowed
Gabe Astrologo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic Prep) to score.
After White went five innings deep,
Myles Durney (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) pitched the sixth, allowing a run on two hits, before
Bryan Grant (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael Academy) struck out the side in the seventh to nab the win and complete the sweep.

The Valiants will have split squad action on Wednesday. The varsity team heads to Eastern Connecticut State for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m., while the junior varsity squad hosts Mount Saint Vincent at 3 p.m.
