Women's Lacrosse Bested By USMMA, 16-10

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team hung tight for most of the game, but a 7-2 third quarter for the visiting United States Merchant Marine Academy pushed the Mariners past the Valiants on Tuesday night. The 16-10 loss drops Manhattanville to 1-7 on the year and 0-2 in the Skyline Conference.

A ten point night by the Skyline's leading scorer Jessie Wohner was too much for Manhattanville to respond to, as the senior scored six goals and dished out four assists. For the Valiants, Lara Keenan (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) led the way with four goals, scoring on each of her shots on net. Maura Kelly (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) scored twice and added an assist, while Marisa D'Angelo (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) and Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) had two-point nights, each scoring and earning an assist.

Despite a pair of early tallies by Wohner, the Valiants were able to take the lead seven minutes into the opening quarter. Ally Petricca (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) responded to Wohner's opening tally with her sixth goal of the season 2:07 into the game. After Wohner struck again to reestablish USMMA's lead, Carr and D'Angelo went back-to-back, putting the home squad ahead with 8:03 left in the opening quarter.

USMMA roared back, scoring four times over the final 5:05 to jump back ahaead 6-3. Kaitlyn Latchaw made it five unanswered for the Mariners, scoring 57 seconds into the second quarter. Keenan stopped the run with a free position goal at 13:06, as the senior scored three of the game's next four goals to pull the Valiants back within two a minute into the second half.

Keenan fired the opening salvo of the quarter, but USMMA took charge by outscoring the Valiants 7-1 over the last 11:34 of the third. The Mariners scored three times in the final minute of the period to go ahead 15-7. The Valiants outscored USMMA 3-1 in the final 15 minutes as Kelly scored twice and Keenan collected her fourth, but the third quarter run put the game out of reach.

In addition to her three point night, Kelly was one of four Valiants with three ground balls while also leading the team in caused turnovers with five.
