THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Another late rally for the Valiants ultimately came up just short on Friday night, as a five goal fourth quarter for the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team was not enough in the 12-9 loss to Maritime College. The Valiants fall to 1-8 overall on the year and 0-3 in the Skyline Conference.
The Privateers used a 5-1 first quarter to take a lead they would not look back from. Maritime would score the first four goals of the game before
Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) was able to get the Valiants on the board courtesy of a
Brialee Logue (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) assist with 5:50 left in the quarter. The Privateers reestablished their four goal lead before the end of the quarter.
The Valiants scored twice to open up the second quarter, started by
Lara Keenan's (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) tally with 10:31 left in the half.
Marisa D'Angelo (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) followed the senior's goal up with an unassisted goal of her own to bring the Valiants back within two with just under eight minutes to play. The score held at 5-3 for better than five and a half minutes before Maritime scored twice in the final 2:20 to go into the half leading 7-3.
Another low scoring third quarter saw just four more goals scored. Sara Wright scored for the home team 18 seconds after the opening draw before
Ally Petricca (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) scored off a
Maura Kelly (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) assist 1:09 into the period. Maritime would score both of the final two goals of the period to extend their lead up to 10-4 entering the final quarter.
Keenan scored her second of the night on Carr's assist with 10:09 to go. After Maritime went back up by six with 7:44 to go, the Valiants score four of the final five goals over the last seven minutes, but were unable to make up all of the necessary ground to tie the game. Keenan completed her third hat trick of the year, finishing D'Angelo's set up with 6:56 to go, before Kelly scored a man-up goal from Carr with 3:40 remaining. Kelly and D'Angelo closed out the game with the final two goals, both coming with the player advantage.
Britney Sirota (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made a season-high 18 saves in the losing effort. Kelly and
Kasey Molito (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson Regional) led the team with four ground balls each, while Logue had a team-high three caused turnovers.
Caity Bianchi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) ended the night as the Valiants' leader on draw controls with three.
