Playle Scores Twice as Field Hockey Drops Season Opener at WestConn

DANBURY, CONN. – A two-goal effort off the stick of Abbey Playle (Reading, England/Leigh High School) was not enough on Thursday evening for the Manhattanville College field hockey team, as the Valiants were defeated 3-2 at Western Connecticut State in the team's season opener. Manhattanville will drop to 0-1 on the year with the loss.

The senior accounted for all of the offense for the Valiants on Thursday, as Playle scored on both of her shots on net. Only Ava Panzer (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) was able to generate more chances on goal, but all four of her scoring chances were denied by WestConn's Kayla Knasko who made six saves in a half of play.

Playle wasted little time, scoring just 66 seconds into the contest to give the road team its first lead of the season. WestConn was able to mount a response in the final 62 seconds of the opening quarter, as Alessia Callahan fired in a shot past netminder Cat Morgan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior) to knot the game up at 1-1 entering the second quarter.

After a scoreless six-plus minutes in the second, Playle struck again off an assist by Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, NY/John Jay High School) to put the Valiants back ahead, 2-1. The lead would hold into halftime, with Morgan making a pair of saves in the scoreless frame.

The score remained stagnant through all of the third before the Wolves were finally able to break through a minute into the fourth as Madison McColl evened up the game. While the Valiants were turned away on the attacking end for the rest of the night, Callahan notched her second of the night with the game-winning tally at 54:36. The Valiants would be held without a shot for the final five minutes of play as WestConn held on for the win.

In all, Morgan made six saves in net for the Valiants across a full 60 minutes of action. Monahan and Felicity Williams (Glen Falls, N.Y./Glen Falls) both logged a shot on net.
