Women’s Soccer Drops Season Opener, 5-1

PURCHASE, N.Y. – After a hard-fought battle, the Manhattanville College women's soccer team fell to the Drew University Rangers, 5-1, on Thursday night.

In the first half, both teams were off to a hot start. Within the first ten minutes, Manhattanville and Drew had both scored a goal. Alexa Krause tallied the shot for the opposing team and Natalie Aracena (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale Kingsbride Academy) came back and matched it for the Valiants.

As the game continued in the first, Drew had plenty of scoring opportunities with eight shots on goal. While Manhattanville only had three, and those were each taken by the previous Valiant scorer, Natalie Aracena (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale Kingsbride Academy)

In the second half, the Valiants were ready to come back strong, but Drew was locked in both offensively and defensively. The first two shots taken for Manhattanville were 57 minutes in by Nadia Parisi (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) and Alexa Fasce (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville High School) which were both saved by Drew's goalkeeper, Anthi Panayides. In the last five minutes of the match, Aracena took another shot which was saved as well. Drew had nine shots on goal for the second half and eventually took the win.

Manhattanville's goalkeeper, Macey Girard (Branford, Conn./Branford) had 8 saves but ultimately wound up with the loss. Drew's goalkeeper, Anthi Panayides had 4 saves on the night.

For Manhattanville, plenty of substitutions throughout the game let a variety of players see the pitch, ten Valiant players came off the bench to have time in the season opener, on top of the starting 11.

Next up, Manhattanville will head to Doylestown, P.A. on Saturday, Sep. 3 to take on Delaware Valley University.
