Women's Soccer Edged Out By Late John Jay Goal

PURCHASE, N.Y. – A John Jay goal in the 87th minute broke up a scoreless tie late as the Manhattanville College women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss on Saturday afternoon. The 1-0 defeat drops the Valiants to 0-4 to begin the year.

Serving as the road team on their home turf of GoValiants.com Field, Manhattanville looking poised to battle to scoreless draw with the Blooudhounds. However, with just under three minutes to go before the final whistle, John Jay's Daniela Vasquez was set up inside the box from teammates Jillian Golden and Katie Healy to shoot the ball past Macey Girard (Branford, Conn./Branford) and give the Bloodhounds the advantage in the final minutes.

Outside of the late offensive opportunity, it was a defensive battle all day long as the two teams combined for just five total shots on net. While the Valiants held a 4-2 shot advantage in the opening 45, the Bloodhounds were able to tilt the pressure the other way in the second half, outshooting Manhattanville 6-1.

Girard and her John Jay counterpart, Alexa Pyatsky (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), both successfully turned away the one shot on target they faced in the opening half. Pyatsky, who began her collegiate career at Manhattanville before graduating this past spring and joining John Jay as a graduate student, played the full 90 minutes and earned the clean sheet for John Jay. Girard, meanwhile, ended the day with three saves in her 90 minutes of action.

Manhattanville's shot on goal came in the 26th minute, as Megan Leser (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) headed a ball towards the Bloodhound net that was denied by Pyatsky. Leser would account for two of Manhattanville's five total shots on the day, with Natalie Aracena (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale Kingsbride Academy), Jennifer Xiong (Connelly Springs, N.C./East Burke) and Morgan Passley (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) each recording a shot in the contest as well.

The Bloodhounds earned the only two corner kicks of the contest. Six different players on the John Jay roster recorded a shot, led by two attempts from Healy and Galicia Monforte.
