GENEVA, N.Y. – An explosive third quarter by St. Lawrence was too much for the Manhattanville College field hockey team to overcome on Sunday, as the Valiants dropped a 4-2 decision to the Saints to conclude the William Smith Classic. The defeat drops the Valiants to 0-5 on the year.
The Valiants led for most of the first half, as
Ava Panzer's (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) first goal of the season in the 9
th minute would be the only tally for either squad in the opening 30 minutes. Trailing 1-0, St. Lawrence flipped a switch offensively, seeking for an equalizer before halftime. The Saints fired eight shots on net in the half, but Valiant goalkeeper
Florence Harrison (Melbourne, Australia/Balwyn High School) was able to successfully turn them all away to protect the shutout entering the third quarter.
The relentless offensive effort by the Saints eventually paid off, as St. Lawrence fired 10 shots in the 15 minutes out of the halftime break. The result was three unanswered tallies by the Saints that swung momentum the other way. Maggie Green, Kate Bouchard and Morgan Misiaszek each were able to fire shots past Harrison as the Saints pulled ahead 3-1 with 15 minutes left to play.
The Valiants responded in the 51
st minute as
Abbey Playle (Reading, England/Leigh High School) netted her team-leading third goal of the year off an assist from
Felicity Williams (Glen Falls, N.Y./Glen Falls) to cut the lead down to one. The Manhattanville offense would be held in check the rest of the contest, being limited to just the one Playle shot in the quarter. Mayson Blondek tallied an insurance goal for St. Lawrence in the 55
th minute to secure the win for the Saints.
In all, Harrison recorded 13 saves in the contest. Panzer and Playle led the team with two shots on goal each, while
Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, NY/John Jay High School) and
Megan Keaveney () added one apiece. St. Lawrence held a 20-3 advantage in penalty corners on the day.
