Women’s Tennis Defeated by John Jay in Season Opener

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's tennis team kicked off the 2022 campaign against John Jay College on Tuesday night. The Valiants were narrowly bested by the Bloodhounds 5-4, falling 0-1 to begin the season.

Opening up with doubles play, the tandem of Victoria Szele (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich High School) and Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) got their Manhattanville careers off to a great start, notching an 8-5 win over Dakota Himaya and Jeonga Kim in the No. 2 position. The two returning Valiants, Bea Pretnar (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Soundview Prep) and Ella Brown (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich), were unsuccessful in the top flight, falling to the tandem of Sarina Moi and Rafaello Rybalko, 8-3. The Bloodhounds were awarded the third doubles point by default with the Valiants unable to field a third doubles pairing on the day.

After inclement weather caused for an extended delay in the middle of the doubles matches, clearer skies took over and allowed for the completion of the singles draws. Three victories would round out the Manhattanville scorecard for the day. Pretnar notched a 6-0, 6-2 win in to top flight over Moi, while Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) tallied a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the fourth singles slot.  While she did not see action in doubles play, Alana Anderson (Wellington, Fla./Palm Beach Central) had a strong showing in No. 5 singles, defeating Mia Sorrentino 6-0, 6-1. Despite the solid play in singles action, losses by Brown in the No. 2 flight (2-6, 0-6) and Szele in No. 3 singles (2-6, 1-6) tied the match up at 4-4. With no other players available to take the court for the Valiants in the No. 6 position, Kenya Kisson was awarded the final point by default to secure the victory for the Bloodhounds.

The Valiants will return to the courts and begin conference play at home for their next match against St. Joseph's University Long Island on Friday evening at 5 p.m.
