Women's Tennis Blanked by Saint Joseph's L.I. in Skyline Opener

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Seeing a conference opponent for the first time on the year, the Manhattanville College women's tennis team was defeated by St. Joseph's Long Island on Friday evening, 9-0. The loss drops the Valiants to a 0-2 start to the season.

For the first time since the 2019-20 season, the Valiants fielded a full team for a women's tennis match. Still, the Golden Eagles were able to win each of the three doubles matches as well as all six singles points to sweep Manhattanville.

Ella Brown (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Victoria Szele (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich High School) were the only pairing to take a game in doubles play, falling to the tandem of Angela Martinez and Morgan Wind 8-1 in the No. 1 position. Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and Alana Anderson (Wellington, Fla./Palm Beach Central) were blanked 8-0 in No. 2 Doubles by Madison DiPalo and Haley Celona, while Lheenzen Chodenrixin (Bhutan, South Asia/Oakwood Friends School) and Luniva Manandhar (Kathmandu, Nepal/Rato Bangala School) were blanked in their collegiate debuts in the third flight by Victoria Corcoran and Joan Dabalsky.

In singles, Szele put up the best fight for the Valiants, representing Manhattanville in the No. 2 position. After dropping the first set 6-0, the junior battled back nicely to take the second 6-4 to force a tiebreaker third. DiPalo would earn the point for the Golden eagles in the longest singles contests of the night, 10-8.

In No. 3 Singles, King fell to Dabalsky 4-6, 1-6, while Anderson suffered a 2-6, 4-6 loss against Celona in the No. 4 position. Brown was defeated in the top spot by Martinez, 0-6, 1-6, while Chodenrixin was bested by Corcoran in her singles debut, 1-6, 0-6. Manandhar was slated to take on Win in the No. 6 flight, but Saint Joseph's was awarded the point by default without the match being played, giving the Golden Eagles a clean sweep.
