Men’s Soccer Drops Road Contest at Drew, 2-1

MADISON, N.J. – A second-half comeback attempt by the Manhattanville College men's soccer team fell short on Saturday afternoon, as the Valiants were bested on the road by Drew University 2-1. The loss drops Manhattanville to 2-2-1 on the year as the Rangers remain a perfect 7-0-0.

Trailing 2-0 at the half, Manhattanville fought valiantly to try and even up the score, firing nine shots in the final 45 minutes of the game. Johnny Antolino (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) was finally able to break through Drew netminder Calum Erlenborn in the 75th minute, but that would be all the Valiant attack could muster on the day. Michael Mezzina (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Morris Catholic) set up the score off a corner kick, finding Trevor Henderson (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) in traffic in front of the cage. Henderson connected with Antolino in the ensuing scramble, as the rookie buried a shot below the crossbar for the goal.

The Rangers scored their only two goals of the afternoon during the first half at the seventh and 23rd minutes as Christian Tyson and Kevin Kiernan spotted the home team a 2-0 lead. Drew narrowly outshot Manhattanville on the day, 15-14.

Outside of Antolino's score, the first points of his collegiate career, Manhattanville's offensive efforts were all turned away. Mezzina and Henderson both recorded a team-best three shots in the contest, with Mezzina's two shots on goal also the top effort for the Valiants on Saturday.

Luis Granados (Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis) played well in net for the Valiants, keeping Manhattanville in the game with a season-high eight saves. The junior made five stops in his scoreless second half of work and ends the day with a goals-against average now sitting at 1.29.

Manhattanville had eight corner kicks to Drew's two on the afternoon, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities in the offensive zone outside of their lone goal.

Next week, the Valiants will be back on the home pitch to face Vassar College on Tuesday, Sep. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
