Men's Tennis Makes Season Debut at King's College Invitational

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – On the courts for the first time since the 2022 NCAA Tournament, the Manhattanville College men's tennis team made their first appearance of the season this past weekend at the King's College Invitational. While inclement weather brought an early end to the event before all of the brackets could be completed, the Valiants were able to emerge victorious in one singles and one doubles finals across the two days.

Playing in a one-round No. 4 Doubles bracket, Vincent Liberatore (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and Jaime Peredo (Uruapan, México/Instituto Morelos) were victorious in the finals against Sam Sidle and Brendan Stockdale of Susquehana, 8-4.

Representing the Valiants in the No. 3 Doubles, Shiel Loganadan (New York, N.Y./Mary McDowell Friends) and Derwin Guzman (Harlem, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) had a strong showing in their first time teaming up. Beginning their run in the quarterfinals, Loganadan and Guzman knocked off Jaden Andresen and Karanveer Saini of FDU-Florham, 8-4. The duo would then defeat Susquehanna's Thomas Hallahan and Gavin Ream, 8-6, to advance to the finals against Scranton's Sal Sullivan and Steven Prosperino, which would ultimately not be played due to rain.

Max Moeller (Crestwood, N.Y./Iona Prep) and Dylan Crowley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) would make a run to the finals in No. 2 Doubles. The duo earned an 8-0 weep of Penn College's Jesse Kight and Zackary Burkhart before notching an 8-5 win over FDU-Florham's Joni Carasso and Kelvin Liwag. Moeller and Crowley would drop a hard fought finals match against Tim Basta and Conor Ryan of Susquehana, 6-8.

Rounding out doubles play for the Valiants, Luis Gonzalez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) and Weston Goodwin (Freeport, ME/Freeport High School) paired up for the No. 1 tournament. The pairing would win 8-2 over Nate Redell and Luke Leach of Lycoming in the quarterfinals, but would fall against Scranton's James Harrington and Patrick O'Mara in the semis, 2-8.

In singles action, Guzman continued to shine, winning the No. 7 bracket for the Valiants. The freshman defeated Ryan Wolford of Scranton 7-5, 6-0 in the semis before defeating FDU-Florham's Quinn Carmody in a weather-shortened match, 3-1, in the finals.

Goodwin, Peredo and Liberatore would also make their respective finals in singles play, but neither would ultimately play in the championship matches due to weather. Goodwin represented the Valiants in the No. 2 tournament, defeating Same Langer of Elizabethtown 6-0, 6-0 in the quarters ahead of a 6-1, 6-0 win over Susquehanna's Basta in the semis. Peredo, meanwhile, won three matches in the No. 5 bracket to advance to the finals. The senior knocked off Ryan Salmon of Arcadia 6-1, 6-0 in the opening round, advancing to the quarterfinals where he notched a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ethan Zelinsky of Elizabethtown. Peredeo would then win a semifinal thriller against Scranton's Prosperino, 6-2, 3-6, 4-1.

Liberatore picked up a pair of wins for Manhattanville in the No. 6 bracket. After defeating Brian Hulsey of Lycoming 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, Liberatore dropped the first set of his semifinals matchup against Susquehanna's Ryan, 1-6. The senior bounced back with a 6-1 win in the second set before taking the breaker 10-8.

Gonzalez dropped a back-and-forth contest in the No. 1 quarterfinals to Penn's Paul Langbein, taking the first set 7-6 (5-0 breaker), before falling in the next two sets, 5-7, 7-10. Loganadan was the Valiants' representative in the No. 3 bracket, where he would be knocked off by FDU-Florham's Ronal Duval 6-1, 6-7 (0-6), 5-10 in the quarterfinals. Crowley matched up with Liwag of FDU-Florham in the No. 4 singles quarterfinals, where he was defeated in three sets, 7-6 (4-0), 0-6, 6-10.
