PURCHASE, N.Y. – Reigniting the Battle of Anderson Hill Road for 2022, the Manhattanville College men's soccer team defeated Purchase College on Tuesday night by a final of 4-0. With the win, the Valiants improve to 5-3-1 overall and remain perfect in Skyline Conference play at 3-0-0.
A pair of goals in each half guided the Valiants to victory.
Sebastian Testa (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) scored both of the first half tallies, his first two scores of the season, while Saturday's hero
Michael Mezzina (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Morris Catholic) notched the pair of goals in the second half to secure the win.
After a scoreless 27 minutes to open up the night, Testa put the Valiants on the board 28:44 into the game off an assist from
Kendall Davis (Atlanta, Georgia/Immaculata). Just two minutes later, Testa struck again, this time off an assist from
Gabriel Jefferies (Tunbridge Wells, U.K./Ridge (N.J.)) to put the not-so-distant visitors ahead 2-0 before the half.
Mezzina added goals two and three of his senior season in the second half, finding the back of the net first in the 47
th minute on an unassisted tally. Mezzina then had another opportunity in the 77
th minute with a penalty kick. Much like in his game-winner from Saturday on the very same field, Mezzina's penalty kick was true, netting the insurance tally with just under 13 minutes to go in regulation.
In all, the Valiants outshot the Panthers 25-3, with 11 of Manhattanville's shots being on goal. Skyline Conference Defensive Player of the Week
Luis Granados (Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis) played 84-plus minutes of shutout ball in net, making one save in each half.
Bert Santiago (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) then closed out the night with 5:56 in goal without facing a shot.
The Valiants earned all nine corner kicks in the contest. Mezzina led the Valiants with four shots, three of which were on net. Testa also fired four total shots, while
George Simpson (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) shot three balls, two on net.
