PURCHASE, N.Y. – A two-goal performance by
Kelly Barrera (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester High School) led the Manhattanville College women's soccer team to victory over USMMA on Wednesday night. The 2-0 win improves the Valiants' overall record to 3-5-1 with the team moving to 3-0-1 in Skyline play.
In the first-ever meeting between the two programs in women's soccer competition, the Valiants were able to outshoot the first year Mariners program 17-8 in the contest. The end result was a two-goal night for the sophomore Barrera, her second in the team's last three games.
Barrera put the Valiants on the board in the 21
st minute with her third goal of the season. The score remained 1-0 into halftime as
Macey Girard (Branford, Conn./Branford) kept the Mariners scoreless with three saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Outshooting USMMA 8-2 in the second half, Barrera struck again in the 84
th minute to put the game on ice. Girard, meanwhile, stopped two more shots for her second shutout of the year. The freshman keeper's goals-against average continues to fall, now down to 1.89. Across her last four games, Girard has allowed just two goals while making 14 saves.
Barrera was one of three Valiants to take a team-high three shots, joined by
Natalie Aracena (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale Kingsbride Academy) and
Megan Leser (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining).
Veronica Lage (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) had two shots on goal, matching Barrera's total on the night.
Corner kicks were hard to come back on the night with Manhattanville earning a 3-1 advantage, with all four corners coming in the first half.

The Valiants will serve as the road team on their home turf the next time out on Saturday as Manhattanville takes of Mount Saint Vincent. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m.
