PURCHASE, N.Y. – Back in action for the first time in ten days, the Manhattanville College field hockey team notched their third consecutive win on Thursday afternoon, defeating Albertus Magnus by a final of 5-2. The win sends the Valiants into conference play next week with a 3-5 overall record.
Manhattanville built out a 4-0 lead over the first half and were able to withstand a fourth quarter comeback effort by the Falcons to secure the win.
Ava Panzer (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) led the offense with a five point night, scoring twice and collecting an assist. The senior has now scored in four-straight games, recording 17 total points in that stretch.
The Valiants got off to a red-hot start, scoring twice in the first five and a half minutes. It was Panzer that got the scoring started in the third minute, tipping in a feed by
Abbey Playle (Reading, England/Leigh High School) to get Manhattanville on the board shortly after the opening whistle. Two minutes later, Playle notched a goal of her own, scoring unassisted for her team-leading 11
th tally of the year.
Carrying the 2-0 lead into the second quarter, Manhattanville would double the advantage prior to the halftime horn. In the 20
th minute,
Megan Keaveney (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) scored her first career goal, knocking in a pass from
Felicity Williams (Glen Falls, N.Y./Glen Falls). The senior Williams would score her own goal two minutes later off a feed from Panzer, sending the Vals to halftime up 4-0. Over the opening 30 minutes, the Valiants outshot the Falcons 15-2.
After a scoreless third quarter, Albertus Magnus had their best offensive period of the night, getting on the board with six shots in the final 15 minutes. Lillian Woods broke up the shutout in the 48
th minutes before an Alexis Duranleau goal assisted by her sister Madison four minutes later quickly cut the Manhattanville lead in half with just under eight minutes to play. Panzer was able to net an insurance tally with five minutes to go off an assist from
Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, NY/John Jay High School) to go back up by three and put the game away.
Cat Morgan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior) got the start in net for the home squad, playing a full 60 minutes and making seven saves with the two goals allowed. Serena Monatague stopped ten shots in the cage for the Falcons.
