PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team fell to Johnson & Wales University, 4-0, on Wednesday night. With this loss, the Valiants fall to 0-3 on the season.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when JWU's Jillian Miele cut down the right side of the crease and tucked the ball past Manhattanville's goalie,
Cat Morgan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior), in the fourth minute of the first period. Later on, a rebound off of a shot by Kaitlyn Freeman gave JWU their second goal of the night in the 13
th minute as Margaret Johnson buried the loose ball. The Valiants had four shots early in the period from
Ava Panzer (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling),
Makenzie Mueller (Northport, N.Y./Northport Senior),
Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, NY/John Jay High School), and
Abbey Playle (Reading, England/Leigh High School), along with four saves from Morgan.

In the second period, Manhattanville was shut out and didn't have the opportunity for any shots or goals. The Wildcats, on the other hand, had four shots taken and another goal was tallied by Katie Sloan, leaving the score 3-0 for JWU at the half.Â

Both the Wildcats and Valiants were hot to start off the second half. Miele added another goal for JWU early in the third period to bring the score to 4-0. Manhattanville had two shots from Playle in the quarter while Monahan and
Felicity Williams (Glen Falls, N.Y./Glen Falls) both fired shots on net that were turned away by Wildcat goalie Madison Flaxington.

Lidia Vasquez-Sinisi (Selden, N.Y./Newfield H.S.) made her collegiate goalkeeper debut in the fourth quarter to spell Morgan. The rookie made three saves in a scoreless 15 minutes of work.Overall, Johnson & Wales had 18 shots, 13 on goal, with four saves and Manhattanville had eight shots, four on goal, with nine combined saves.Â
Amanda Benedetti (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) recorded a defensive save in the first quarter, the first save by a non-Valiant goalkeeper this season. The Wildcats held a 14-4 advantage in penalty corners in the contest.

The field hockey team will continue their road slate this weekend when they play in the William Smith Classic this weekend. The Valiants take on host William Smith College on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. ahead of Sunday's neutral site meeting with St. Lawrence University.
