Men's Hockey Topped in Shootout at Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Taking to the ice in Rochester, the Manhattanville College men's hockey team fell in a shootout to Nazareth on Friday evening following a 4-4 tie through overtime. The Valiants will earn one point in the conference standings following the decision, currently holding onto fifth in the UCHC with a 6-8-2 overall record and a 5-5-1 mark in conference play.

In a game with no shortage of scoring, the Valiants received goals from four different skaters on the night. Glynn Robitaille (Northville, Mich./Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)) opened up the night with a power play goal 5:54 into the night, scoring his third of the year from Josh Fletcher (Calgary, Alb./Kindersley Klippers (SJHL)). Manhattanville would only be able to celebrate their lead for 2:56 before Ethan Louisos would pull the hosting Golden Flyers even at 1-1.

The period was far from over as Nazareth would claim their first lead of the night 13:03 into the period as Jeremy Swartz converted on a power play chance of his own, earning Henry McKinney his second assist of the night while Logan Tobias picked up the secondary helper. With time winding down in the opening frame, Hayden Taylor (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Islanders Hockey Club (NCDC)) would strike for the Vals as the senior earned his fifth goal of the season from Dylan Pollak (New Fairfield, Conn./Selects Academy (18U AAA)) with 1:51 to go before the period would come to an end.

After assisting on the night's opening tally, Fletcher found his way into the goal column for the fourth time this season and the second time in his last three games. The senior forward as assisted by Mason Emoff (Collingwood, Ont./Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL), Pembroke Lumberkings (CCHL)) to put Manhattanville back ahead. It would be penalty trouble that would once again allow Nazareth to even up the score later in the period. After the Valiants successfully killed off Troy Crosson's (Hatfield, Pa./New Jersey Rockets (NCDC)) tripping penalty, Jack McDonough (Westbrook, Ct./New Jersey 87s (EHL)) would be sent to the box 48 seconds later for boarding. The Golden Flyers would score on their first shot with the man advantage by Tobias at 13:47, sending the game into the third tied up at 3-3.

The Valiants would respond with their second power play tally of the night 6:35 into the third as Nick Prestia (Niagara Falls, Ont./Pickering Panthers (OJHL)) ripped the team's first shot with the man advantage past Matt Sayles for his fifth of the year. While Manhattanville attempted to preserve the one goal lead for the remainder of the night, Nazareth had other plans as Tobias struck for his third point of the contest at 13:15 to even the score for the fourth time on the night. Scoring would come to a halt there as the game would head into overtime tied 4-4.

Manhattanville would be held to just one shot in overtime, as Robitaille was denied on his attempt for the game-winner. Nazareth, meanwhile, would fire six shots in the five minute extra frame, but Sebastian Woods (Limehouse, Ontario, Canada/Utica Jr. Comets (NCDC)) turned them all away, with five of the shots coming during a Nazareth power play.

With overtime not enough to determine who would earn the extra point, the teams turned to a shootout. Robitaille and Nicholas Charron would each score in the opening round before both teams' skaters were denied over the ensuing three rounds. Pollak, Noah Bradley (Lancaster, Pa./Philadelphia Revolution (EHL)) and Mason Emoff (Collingwood, Ont./Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL), Pembroke Lumberkings (CCHL)) would each be denied as the skills competition headed into a fifth round. Taylor would be unsuccessful on his attempt before Blake Frost brought an end to the night after beating Woods with a shot, earning the shootout win for Nazareth, 2-1.

Woods ended the night with 37 saves on the night, extending his streak of 35 or more stops to five straight games.

The Golden Flyers outshot the Valiants 41-22. Despite not finding the back of the net, James Gregory (Darien, Conn./Connecticut Roughriders (EHL)) led Manhattanville with four shots on net. Nazareth would also hold a similar advantage in faceoffs on the night, 46-24. Fletcher had the most success on the dot for the Valiants with seven draw wins.

The Valiants finished 2-of-3on the power play, scoring on both of their shot attempts with the man advantage. Nazareth had five opportunities with an extra skater, converting on two power plays with 10 total shots.
