ROCHESTER, N.Y. – After a 4-4 tie on Friday which went into overtime and later a shootout, the Manhattanville College men's hockey team fell to Nazareth College on Saturday evening, 5-1. With the loss, the Valiants drop to 6-9-2 overall on the season and 5-6-1 in UCHC play.
While the Valiants were able to keep pace with Nazareth in the first period, the Golden Flyers would score four unanswered goals over the final 40 minutes to earn the win. Nazareth struck first with Henry McKinney scoring shorthanded 11:18 into the contest. It would not take long for the Valiants to net the equalizer while still on the power play, as 52 seconds later
Nick Prestia (Niagara Falls, Ont./Pickering Panthers (OJHL)) scored for a second straight game with his sixth of the year off an assist from
James Gregory (Darien, Conn./Connecticut Roughriders (EHL)).
The score held at 1-1 through most of the second period before the Goldne Flyers scored twice in the final three minutes. Ethan Louisos put the Golden Flyers back ahead at 17:07. Nazareth would double their lead 13 seconds before the intermission horn on a Liam Beaudoin goal, putting the home team up 3-1 to begin the third period.
Louisos would earn the hat trick for Nazareth with a pair of goals in the third, scoring at 5:19 and 14:07. The Valiants would put ten pucks on net in the third but were unable to solve Raphael Provencher outside of Prestia's first period tally as the Golden Flyer goalie finished with 22 saves.
Sebastian Woods (Limehouse, Ontario, Canada/Utica Jr. Comets (NCDC)) earned the start in the crease for Manhattanville, making 24 saves while allowing four goals in 45-plus minutes on the ice. One rookie goaltender gave way to another as
Tripp Clarke (Cazenovia, N.Y./Northern Cyclones (USPHL Premier)) would make his collegiate debut for the final 14:41 of regulation. Clarke made three saves while allowing a goal in his first appearance.
The Golden Flyers dominated the faceoff circle with 34 draws to the Valiants' 22.
Lane Paddison (100 Mile House, Canada/Canmore Eagles (AJHL)) led the team with nine draws, while
Raymond Speerbrecker (Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada/Revelstoke Grizzlies (KIJHL)) won six.
Manhattanville finished 1-for-5 on the power play, scoring on their initial man advantage. In total, the Valiants would fire eight shots with the extra skater. Nazareth was held 0-for-2 on their power play opportunities with four shots.
The Valiants will continue play on the road next weekend when they head to Aston, Pa. to take on conference foe, Neumann University at 7 p.m. on Friday evening.
