Women's Basketball Rolls Past Old Westbury, 74-31

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Bouncing back from last week's loss with thunder, the Manhattanville College women's basketball team picked up a 74-31 victory over Old Westbury on Wednesday night. The victory makes the Valiants 14-3 on the season with a 10-2 Skyline Conference record.

There was plenty of offense to go around as the Valiants posted their highest offensive output since Dec. 1 against Yeshiva. Four scorers finished the night with double figures while 10 of the 12 Valiants that stepped on the court scored a point. The trio of Angela Downey (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst), Julianna Kascic (North Bergen, N.J./Paramus Catholic) and Jamison Agostino (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) each finished with 14 points to lead the team on the night.

Downey shot 71 percent off the bench, hitting a pair of threes as she reached double digits for the first time in nine games. The 14 points was her second-highest output this season. Kascic and Agostino, meanwhile, did their work as members of the starting five. The senior Kascic shot 6-of-9 from the field while adding four rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals as she continues to lead the Valiants with 14.5 points per game. For Agostino, it was her 13th time scoring 10 or more this season as she continues to chase after the single-season three point record. With one deep ball on Wednesday, the junior brings her season total to 55, the sixth-most in program history an 11 shy of Spencer Shore's record. Agostino would also add a career-high seven assists.

The Valiants outrebounded the Panthers 38-31. While playing just nine minutes, Esther Ramos (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) ended the night with a team-high five boards. Livi Correia (North Attleboro, Mass./Worcester Academy) matched Kascic's four rebounds as much like the scoring output, ten Valiants ended the night with a carom.

Ja'nya Flash opened up the night's scoring with a jumper, but the early lead would be the only time Old Westbury found themselves ahead on the night. The Valiants rattled off eight straight points, four from each of Kascic and Smith, to take the lead that would carry throughout the remainder of the night. After the Panthers' opening basket, the Valiants outscored Old Westbury 16-5 in the remainder of the first quarter as Agostino hit a jumper at the buzzer to put Manhattanville up 16-7.

The Valiant lead would reach double figures as the second quarter got underway as Correia and Agostino hit back-to-back baskets. Old Westbury would be unable to score consecutive baskets over the remainder of the half as Manhattanville continued to gain separation. After Sierra Rowe hit a three for the Panthers, the Valiants scored 11 straight points to extend the lead to 39-12. Julie Debrocky (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) would convert an and-1 for the Valiants in the final minute before Flash hit a pair of free throws to close out the half as Manhattanville led 42-16.

Manhattanville held the Panthers to just five made field goals in the second half to put the finishing touches on the convincing win. While the Valiants' largest run of the third quarter would be just four points, the defense prevented Old Westbury from having much success with the ball to allow Manhattanville outscore the Panthers 15-6 as Amanda Orlando (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) hit four straight free throws to close out the quarter, putting the Valiants up 57-22.

It was more of the same in the final 10 minutes as the Valiants shot 55 percent to close out the night. Manhattanville scored eight straight to begin the final quarter as the lead eventually climbed up to 48. With things all said and done at the final buzzer, Manhattanville would secure the 74-31 win. It was the third-fewest points that Manhattanville has allowed this season, while Old Westbury's 11 field goals on the night is tied for the second-least made by a Valiant opponent in 2022-23.
