FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's basketball was victorious on Saturday afternoon as the Valiants completed the regular-season sweep of Farmingdale State with a 65-29 win. Manhattanville stands at 15-2 overall and 11-2 in Skyline play as the week concludes.
The Valiants outscored their opponents by a 139-60 margin this week in a pair of shutdown defensive efforts. The 29 points allowed on Saturday is the second-fewest points an opponent has scored against Manhattanville this season and is also the second-lowest offensive output by the Rams all season long.
Leading three scorers in double-figures was
Niyona Smith (Baltimore, MD/Concordia Prep) as the sophomore set a new season-high with 16. Smith shot 6-of-10 from the field alongside a 4-for-7 clip at the charity stripe for her seventh game with 10 or more points this season. She added a team-leading two blocks with six rebounds.
Amanda Orlando (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) bounced back from her six point outing on Wednesday against Old Westbury by putting up 14 on Saturday. The four-time Skyline Rookie of the Week went 6-for-11 on field goal attempts alongside four boards, three assists and a pair of steals.
Angela Downey (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) made it back-to-back games in double figures with an 11 point outing against the Rams, hitting all three of Manhattanville's three pointers on the day.
Julianna Kascic (North Bergen, N.J./Paramus Catholic) led the way on the boards with 16 rebounds, pulling down seven off the offensive glass. Downey would finish with eight boards to set a new season-best, while
Kristen Scrobola (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas High School) came down with six caroms. The Valiants dominated the glass with 57 rebounds to Farmingdale's 39.
In a preview of how the day would play out, Farmingdale went 0-for-13 from the field in the opening quarter, scoring just two points in the opening 10 minutes via free throws. The poor start shooting allowed the Valiants to build up a large lead early, opening on a 7-0 run over the opening 5:15. After the Rams would get on the board with a pair of free throws from Tiffany Sosa, Manhattanville went right back to work with ten unanswered points to close out the final 3:22 of the frame. Downey delivered the big blows, draining back-to-back threes to close out the quarter to put Manhattanville up 17-2.
Manhattanville kept the foot on the gas to close out the half as the run carried into the second quarter with another 11 unanswered points. A layup by Orlando bookended the 21-0 run over a span of 7:44, putting the Valiants up 28-2. The Rams would finally hit their first field goal of the day with 4:16 left in the half off an Adrianna Romo-Leroux jumper. Farmingdale's best offensive production continued to come from the free throw line with four shots made from the charity stripe to close out the half, but it did little to cut into the Valiant lead which sat at 34-8 at halftime.
While the Rams were able to get into some offensive rhythm in the third, Manhattanville kept on scoring, shooting 57 percent in the third quarter to remain in control. The lead would climb up to 30 in the period off a Scrobola jumper with 6:10 remaining. With Farmingdale going 6-for-10 from the field in the quarter, the Rams were able to prevent the Valiants from gaining much more separation as the Valiants held a 27 point lead to begin the fourth, 53-26.
The Valiant defense adjusted to Farmingdale's best shooting quarter of the day by limiting the Rams to just three points over the final ten minutes. Victoria Kantzian hit a jumper while Lissette Cordero hit a free throw to begin the quarter, but that would be all for the Farmingdale offense. The Rams were held without a point for the final 8:30 of regulation as the Valiants closed out the game on a 12-0 run.
