Women's Tennis Bests Purchase 6-3 in Battle of Anderson Hill Road

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's tennis team was victorious on Tuesday evening against neighboring Skyline rival Purchase College, besting the Panthers by a final of 6-3. The win moves the Valiants' record on the year to 4-2 overall and improves their conference mark to 2-1.

The Valiants opened up the match by taking the top two doubles draws. In the top flight, Bea Pretnar (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) celebrated her birthday by partnering with Keto Karkashadze (Tbilisi, Georgia/New School International) for an 8-4 win against Amelia Perlmutter and Elaina Coppola. The rookie phenom tandem of Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) and Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) took care of business in the No. 2 showing, knocking off Olivia Menchell and Novalie Nguyen 8-3. The pairing is now 5-1 in doubles action. Purchase would avoid the doubles sweep by taking the No. 3 flight as Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and Elizabeth Dolce (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) were bested by Sierra Blanco and Harley Colletti, 4-8.

The victors in doubles would each emerge victorious in singles action as Manhattanville earned the win in each of the top four flights. Pretnar handled Perlmutter in the No. 1 showdown, 6-2, 6-1, while Doyle handled Emma Arnaud in the No. 3 flight, 6-0, 6-3. Purchase was able to respond with wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 showings, as King fell to Blanco 4-6, 3-6 while Dolce was bested by Nguyen, 3-6. 1-6.

With the match score sitting at 4-3 in favor of the Valiants, Manhattanville needed to claim one of the remaining two singles matchups to earn the win. Both contests would take a third set to determine a winner, but the Valiants outlasted the Panthers in both contests to secure the win. After dropping the opening set to Menchell 5-7, Ortiz rallied back on Court No. 2 with a 6-4 win in the second to force a breaker. From there, the rookie earned the win with a 6-2 decision. It was a similar story for Karkashadze against Coppola in the No. 4 flight as the Panther senior took the opening set 6-3. Karkashadze would win a marathon second set 7-6 (8-6) before taking the third 6-2 to earn a 6-3 match win for the team down Anderson Hill Road.
