PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's tennis team successfully defended their home courts on Thursday afternoon as the Valiants bested Yeshiva University in a tightly-contested 5-4 match. Manhattanville improves to 5-2 overall on the year while moving to 3-1 in conference play.
As has been the case in most of the team's wins, a hot start in doubles play paved the way to victory for Manhattanville. On the top court,
Bea Pretnar (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) and
Keto Karkashadze (Tbilisi, Georgia/New School International) handled Shira Adler and Micah Mamoun, 8-1. Soon after, it was
Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and
Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) logging an 8-2 victory over Liana Friedman and Anna Laufer in No. 2 action. Both of the Valiants' top doubles pairings improve to 6-1 on the year. While unable to complete the doubles sweep,
Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and
Elizabeth Dolce (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) had a strong match against Yeshiva's Sarah Liederman and Sarah Grunseid, falling 5-8.
Manhattanville would secure the win by winning each of the top three singles flights. As was the case in her doubles action, Pretnar was the first to secure the win on the No. 1 court against Adler, 6-0, 6-1. Doyle then brought the Valiants to the brink of the match win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Micha Mamoun, 6-1, 6-2. From there, Ortiz secured the win for Manhattanville as she outlasted Friedman in a third set. After dropping the opening frame 3-6, the rookie responded with a convincing 6-1 win in set two before taking the draw with a 10-8 marathon deciding set.
Karkashadze would fall in three sets to Liederman on Court No. 4, taking the opener 6-3 before falling 2-6, 2-10. King forced a breaker in her opening set against Anna Laufer in the No. 5 flight, falling 6-7 (4-6) before dropping the second set 2-6. Grunseid wrapped up the scoring for Yeshiva as she bested Dolce in the No. 6 showing, 6-2, 6-3.
