KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The Manhattanville women's soccer team earned their third draw of the season against USMMA, 1-1, on Thursday evening. The Valiants now reside at 5-4-3, with a 2-2-3 record in conference play.
After trailing in the contest for 88 minutes, Caitlin Ward (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown High School) played the role of hero this evening, poking in a ball served in off a corner kick from Natalie Aracena (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale Kingsbride Academy) after it bounced around in the six-yard box. The ball first found the cleat of Skyla Marrone (East Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) who then booted it towards cage, finding Ward's right foot to bury it into the netting for her first goal of the season.
The Valiants found themselves down in the contest quick, as the Mariner's found the back of the net just a minute into the game, after a defensive miscue from the Valiants back line led to Alexx Forman touching it past Macey Girard (Branford, Conn./Branford) for the early lead.
That score would hold till the half-time whistle, as Manhattanville couldn't capitalize off shots from Jennifer Xiong (Connelly Springs, N.C./East Burke) and Kelly Barrera (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester High School), as they were turned away by USMMA goaltender Margaret Ripperger.
Manhattanville would fire off eight of their twelve shots in the second half, as Mia Castaneda (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), Jenna Moraglia (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), and Nadia Parisi (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) all generated chances for the Valiants. The defensive third of Manhattanville locked down their half of the field in the second stanza, allowing a singular shot in 45 minutes.
The Valiants outshot the Mariners 12-7, with six shots on net compared to five of USMMA, while also holding the corner kick advantage, 4-0.
