PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team was defeated by St. Mary's College of Maryland after the Seahawks scored eight goals throughout the contest. With the loss, the Valiants fell to 3-9 overall and 0-3 in Atlantic East Conference play.
It would be a back-and-forth start to the game as neither team would score within the first ten minutes of action. St. Mary's would get on the board first with a goal from Brenna Ziegler, assisted by Josie Shermeyer. The Seahawks would then log a goal less than a minute into the second quarter before scoring another pair of goals to go up, 4-0, into the half.
Four goals would be scored by the Seahawks in the final two quarters. Despite eight total goals, the defensive effort from the Valiants was unmatched, showcasing their back line to its fullest.
Cat Morgan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior) and
Florence Harrison (Melbourne, Australia/Balwyn High School) shared time in the net for the Valiants. Morgan would get the start and make nine saves while giving up six goals to the Seahawks. Harrison would take over for the third quarter and record six saves and give up two goals.
Felicity Williams (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) led the Valiants overall with one single shot throughout the 60 minutes.
For the Seahawks, Ziegler tallied a hat trick to lead their efforts. Hayden Kesner, Emma Watkins, Audrey Dickens, Jena Vanskiver, and Katherine O'Brien scored a goal each.
St. Mary's held a 14-2 advantage in penalty corners.
The Valiants will hit the road to take on Neumann University on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 4 p.m.
