PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - The shorthanded Manhattanville women's tennis team fell on the road to St. Joseph's Long Island, 7-2, on Sunday afternoon. The Valiants finish the regular season with a 6-3 overall record, posting a 4-2 mark in conference play.
Despite the loss, the Valiants have officially secured a postseason berth as the team holds steady in third place in the Skyline Conference standings. Manhattanville returns to the Conference Championship Tournament for the first time since 2021.
The Valiants would emerge victorious in one of the three doubles contests, notching a victory in the No. 1 flight. The tandem of Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) and Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) downed Natalie Kopala and Morgan Wind by a score of 8-6. In the second flight, Elizabeth Dolce (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) and Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) were bested by Haley Celona and Madison DiPalo, 8-1. The Golden Eagles would secure the final doubles point as the Valiants defaulted in the No. 3 flight, to take a 2-1 lead as the contest headed into singles play.
Manhattanville would earn another point in the No. 2 match, when Ortiz defeated Angela Avecillas Martinez, logging a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
The Valiants would still string together strong performances on the rest of the courts. Doyle would fall to Kopala 6-2, 6-2 in the top flight, with King bested by Goodyear 6-0, 6-0. The final two matches went in the Golden Eagles' favor, as Dolce fell 6-3, 6-3 to Celona with DiPalo rounding out the match, defeating Mikhalia Grant (Mount Vernon, N.Y./New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science II), 6-0, 1-0. The Valiants would default in the No. 6 flight, having the scorebook show a 7-2 victory for St. Joseph's.
